Dear Sirs,
Advice
As a move to produce cleaner engines with reduced impact on the environment,
Massey Ferguson has developed an improved breather system on the above
tractors that reduces emissions by retaining vapour in the engine.
Pressure from the rocker cover breather is fed to a vapour/gas separator, Fig 1 from
where any vapour is fed to the dipstick tube fig 2.

Dear Sirs,
Advice
On tractors with Independent PTO there is now a circlip placed inside the end of
the PTO input shaft. This is to ensure that in all cases, the needle bearing, Part
Number 1677724M1, fig 1, remains in place and does not protrude from the end of
the shaft. The new shaft Part Number is given below and when ordered, includes
both the shaft and the circlip.
The relative transmission assembly Part Numbers have received suffix upgrades.

Action
Where replacement of the shaft or bearing is required, it is advised that the new
Part Number is ordered, as described below.

Dear Sirs,
Advice
We are pleased to announce that from the monoblock numbers listed below,
Tortoise/Hare and second/third gear selector forks are manufactured using a
molybdenum coating on the area of contact with the synchromesh unit. This
greatly improves the wear resistance of the forks and provides increased service
life.
The other selector forks in the 12x4 gearbox, where necessary are already
molybdenum coated.
Action
If a selector fork requires replacement in any of the given applications, the part
number outlined below should be used.

NOTES
• Where a cut-in point for a particular model is not given, please assume that
from Serial Number XXXX160612, the upgrade will be present.
• Although service life will be increased on the new forks, it should always be
remembered that misuse of the gear selector mechanism would decrease the
life of the forks and of the synchro assemblies. This may arise as a result of
constant gearlever loading while driving, or by extended selection time
through lack of brake use in down-shifts.

Dear Sirs,
Advice
To improve the structural integrity of the chassis during bending forces and to assist
in the elimination of oil leaks, the above tractors are now fitted with a steel gasket
between the gearbox and rangebox, and between the rangebox and centre
housing.
In addition to this, dowels are used in front and behind the rangebox to prevent any
shuffle between the chassis components caused by longitudinal twist and resulting
reduction in fit. These two improvements have been introduced together.
The gasket may be fitted on 5300 series produced before the cut-in. For 400 series
produced before the cut-in, the gasket will directly fit the rear of the spacer only.

be used in these positions.

Dear Sirs,
Advice
A new seal has been developed to improve the sealing efficiency of the rear wheel

the serial number given below and may be fitted to all the above models produced
before this number.
Action
If replacement of the seal is required please order the part number given below.
Note: The new seal is a slightly tighter fit than the old one. For this reason it is
advisable to use a little transmission oil around the outside to aid assembly.

INTERNAL EPICYCLIC SEAL
Advice
The oil seal, fig 1, which separates the oil in the rear epicyclics from the oil in the
rear axles and transmission, now uses an improved sealing material. The new
material remains within engineering specifications but provides a much improved
heat resistance for superior sealing performance during heavy braking applications.
For this reason the part number remains the same.
Those seals supplied by Massey Ferguson Parts Division are also constructed using
the new material.

2. Wipe the faces clean with a clean cloth moistened with cleaner 3931 549M1.
Repeat the procedure until all dirt and grease is removed.
3. Allow all traces of cleaner to evaporate from the clean joint surfaces. A dry
clean cloth may be used to wipe the faces to reduce drying times.
4. Ensure that the MF Locking Fluid 3931 539 / 545 M1 is not past its expiry date

Dear Sirs,
Advice
The factory has increased the torques of the bolts that secure the hydraulic linkage
lift cover to the centre housing. The different settings are according to bolt
thickness.
This change has been made in conjunction with the earlier use of Loctite 509 and is
designed to increase the rigidity of the joint during high stress applications where a
vertical bending force on the chassis is created, often during heavy linkage or draft
work. The bolts themselves have not changed.
Action
In the event of re-fitment of the hydraulic lift cover, it is vital to tighten the bolts to
the following torques as indicated in the diagrams below;
• ‘A’ = 7/16” bolts and are tightened to 110 Nm
• ‘B’ = 1/2” bolts and are tightened to 180 Nm
This Action applies to all tractors in the above series’ irrespective of build date.
All internal and external adjustments should be checked during re-fitment.

400 Series
5300 Series
NOTE
• It is important that this information is used in conjunction with BTRAC 09/04
that details the use of Loctite 509 fixing compound during installation of the
hydraulic lift cover
• If the bolt torques are to be adjusted without the re-fitment of the hydraulic lift
cover, the bolts should be loosened before applying the final torque. This will
ensure that the torque settings are not affected by the bonding effect of the
Loctite on the shanks of the bolts

Dear Sirs,
Advice
We are pleased to announce the introduction of a new Thermostart assembly in the
engine intake manifold on the above tractors.
The change has been made to improve the performance of the unit in a broad range
of territories and operating conditions.
Action
If replacement of the Thermostart unit is required, it should be carried out according
to the following instructions;
1. Disconnect the fuel pipe and the electrical connection from the unit
2. Remove the Thermostart from the manifold anti-clockwise
3. To fit the new assembly, ensure that the contact faces of the manifold and the
new Thermostart are clean. Put the sealing washer in place and fit the
Thermostart. Tighten the assembly to 31 Nm.
4. Check the fuel pipe and if it is still full of fuel, connect it to the new
Thermostart unit. If the fuel has drained from the pipe, eliminate the air from
the pipe according to fuel system bleeding procedures.
5. Connect the electrical connector
Note: Some older tractors have a different type of electrical connector on the
harness. For these it will be necessary to snip off the harness connector and
replace using a locally sourced 10-mm Lucar type connector.

Dear Sirs,
Advice
The neutral start switch that prevents the engine from starting with the
transmission in gear has been improved with enhanced protection against moisture
and dirt ingress. The switch, located on the top of the gearbox, is activated by the
High / Low range selector rail.
The new switch defaults to ‘Normally Closed’, which means that when the High /
Low gear lever is in the Neutral position, a recess in the selector rail allows the
plunger on the switch to extend, the electrical circuit to be completed (closed) and
for the engine to start. This is unlike the previous switch, that was ‘Normally Open’
and required that the plunger be retracted to close the circuit and to start the
engine. It is for this reason that the High / Low selector fork rail has also required
change, allowing the plunger in the switch to remain in the appropriate position for
the engine to start only in Neutral.

Action
For switch replacement on later tractors, the new part number given below should
be ordered.
Where replacement of the switch is required on an earlier build of tractor the field
service kit should be used and the connector changed in the following procedure;
5. Remove the old switch from the transmission and using the washer supplied,
screw the new switch in its place and tighten using a 28mm spanner.
7. Use a cable tie if necessary to ensure the harness and lead are tidy

Dear Sirs,
Advice
The following changes have been made to the fuse box on the above tractors:
• The bolts holding the fuse box lid to the hinge are now shorter. This change
has been made to avoid the possibility of the bolts interfering with the
electrical cables.
• A spring clip has been added to hold the headlight relay, identification K02,
tight and ensure good electrical contact on the pins. Poor or intermittent
contact may cause the relay to fail.

Action
If the bolts are found to be chaffing the cable, or the relay is found to be loose, the
new parts may be used, below.
Yours faithfully
