SUGGESTIONS FOR CREATING YOUR OWN MAPS

Number of quantum cubes
The more quantum cubes on a map, the longer the game: try 4 cubes per player for a quick skirmish and up to 7 cubes per player for an epic campaign.

Combat vs. Exploration

Several design factors influence the style of gameplay that happens on a map.
• Overall, smaller maps tend to have more combat and larger maps tend to have less combat.
• A map with more quantum cube locations in a central area encourages combat. A map with larger-numbered planets dispersed to the far corners of the map encourages movement and exploration.
• A “tight” map with fewer quantum cube locations also tends towards combat. An average number of total cube locations is equal to the number of players + the total number of quantum
cubes in the game. More cube locations than that and you will have a looser map that emphasizes exploration. Fewer than that, and you will have a tighter map that emphasizes combat.

Avoiding shut-out
In designing maps, it’s important to make sure one player can’t shut out another player by grabbing all of the planets with low numbers. To make sure a map is viable, do a test of the quantum
cube locations by following these steps:
1. Place quantum cubes in the starting locations as if you are setting up the game.
2. Take one color of quantum cubes. Put every cube of that color but one on a different planet. Place them on the planets with the fewest available spaces.
3. Do the same for the next color, and then continue for the rest of the colors.
4. When this is done, make sure that there is at least one available space remaining for each color’s final quantum cube.
If a cube can’t be placed, it means a player could be shut out of winning the game. To correct this, add more quantum cube locations by adding planets or increasing planet numbers.
