Facts about space: life on board the International Space Station Page 1|2|3
Have you ever wondered what astronauts do all day in space? How do they spend their time on board the
International Space Station? Before astronauts go into space, they have to train their bodies to get used to the
new routines on the International Space Station. As part of their daily routine, they plan for 8 hours of sleep at
the end of each day. It is very important that they have regular sleep and wake times. When we go to sleep on
Earth, we have natural things to help us, such as the dark and lying down in a flat position on our comfortable
beds. However, in space, the sun rises and sets 16 times every 24 hours, so it is not easy for astronauts to get to
sleep naturally. They usually wear something over their eyes to keep out the light or cover the windows to stop
the sun shining through. They normally sleep in sleeping bags that they attach to a wall to stop them moving
around. They get up when the alarm clock sounds, or sometimes mission control on Earth plays music to wake
them up.
Astronauts are very busy and have to manage their time very well. They work for 12 hours a day and normally
spend most of this time doing scientific experiments. They also have to make time for cleaning and repairing
the Space Station. This is a very important part of their job.
It’s very important that the astronauts stay fit and healthy in space. They spend 2 hours a day exercising and
getting ready for spacewalks. In their free time they often take photographs of the amazing views, watch movies,
or listen to music.
