CONSTRUCTIVISM

An Araling Panlipunan teacher reflects on using constructivist teaching methods. Constructivism holds that learning occurs through active involvement in building knowledge from prior experiences rather than passive receipt of information. The teacher provides an example lesson on the seven wonders of the world where students create a travel vlog using multimedia tools to virtually visit each site based on their existing knowledge, allowing them to construct new understandings. This approach helps students make use of prior learning to analyze information in a meaningful way. The teacher concludes that creative, student-centered methods like constructivism can help boost learning outcomes.

CONSTRUCTIVISM
Most teachers are continuously aiming for students’ increased achievement by trying
different strategies or approaches in teaching Araling Panlipunan, to stay away from using
too much traditional methods. We also find ways to improve our teaching styles and not
too much with the authoritative styles in teaching the said subject.

Constructivist teaching is based on the belief that learning occurs as learners are actively
involved in a process of meaning and knowledge construction as opposed to passively
receiving information, such as Question and Answer method. As the name suggests, in
constructivism teaching, learners are the makers of meaning and knowledge.

This approach is based on the theories of John Dewey and Jean Piaget’s Child
Development which states that education must engage with and enlarge experience and
the exploration of thinking and reflection associated with the role of educators. Simply
put, their theories suggest that all knowledge is constructed from a base of prior
knowledge. Children are not a blank slate and knowledge cannot be imparted without the
child making sense of it according to his or her current conceptions. In short, children
learn best when they are allowed to construct a personal understanding based on
experiencing and reflecting on those experiences. The theories of Dewey and Piaget are
now popularly known as Progressive Education.
A good example of a lesson in Araling Panlipunan using Constructivist teaching
appropriate for the first Grading period is the TARA BIYAHE TAYO ACTIVITY wherein
students design their learning through the use of their prior knowledge about a particular
tourist spot which are famous in the world. Based on their prior knowledge, the students
now will create a travel vlog wherein they will use a photo editing/video editing
application wherein they will travel the seven wonders of the world using the said
application. Students already have the idea about the use of editing application so what
they will do now is to create learning out of their prior knowledge. Also, students already
know different information about the seven wonders of the world. It is easy for them to
construct ideas based on what they know about the topic/concept.

This will help students dissect information based on their prior knowledge. This will help
them to learn better, and create meaningful learning in the class.

Using different approaches like the Constructivist strategy, may help students to learn
better. Teacher must continue to be more creative and persevering in providing students
with additional knowledge by upgrading their line of work.
