CLASS 9
CHAPTER GRAVITATION
PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT

1 The value of gravitational constant G on earth is 6.67 x 10-11 Nm2/ kg2? What is its value on the
surface of moon?

2 Two objects of masses m1 and m2are dropped in vacuum from a height above the surface of earth
(m1 is greater than m2). Which one will reach the ground first and why?

3 A ball is dropped from a tower of height 5 m. With what velocity does it strike the ground? [g= 10
m/s^2]

4 Mass of a book is 500 g on surface of the earth. What will be its mass at a height equal to radius of
earth?

5 What is the weight of an object at center of earth?

6 Define 1 kg weight. Express it in newton.

7 Convert a force of 5 kg-wt into SI unit of force.

8 Mass of a planet is twice that of the earth and its radius is four times of the earth. Find the value
of g' on its surface.

9 If the distance between two objects is increased four times, then by how many times will the mass
of one of the objects be changed to maintain the same gravitational force?

10 (a) Name the balances used to measure mass and weight.

(b) Weight of an object will be lessor or more at Antarctica as compared to the weight of object at
Delhi. Give reason for your answer.
11 A toy car falls to the ground in 0.4 s. Calculate its speed just before striking the ground.

(Assume g = 10 ms-2).

12 A marble is dropped from the top of a tower. What distance does it fall after 3 s of dropping?
Find its velocity at this point.

13 Your mass on earth is 50 kg. Planet 'm' has two times force of gravity of that on earth. What will
be your mass and weight on planet 'm'?

14 An object thrown up with a velocity of 20 m/s. Find

(a) the maximum height attained by it.

b) the total time taken by it to return back. [Take g = 10 m/s^2]

15 A body weighs 30 kg on surface of earth. Find its weight on a planet whose mass is (1/9)th the
mass of earth and radius is half of earth.

16 The weight of a body on the surface of the earth is 392 N. What will be the weight of this body on
a planet whose mass is double that of the earth and radius is four times that of the earth?

17 The gravitational force between two objects is 100N. How should the distance between these
objects be changed so that the force between them becomes 50 N?

18 How does the weight of an object vary with respect to mass and radius of the earth? In a
hypothetical case, if the diameter of the earth becomes half of its present value and its mass
becomes four times of its present value, then how would the weight of any object on the surface of
the earth be affected?

19 What happens to the magnitude of the force of gravitation between two objects if

a) Distance between them is doubled?

b) Both the masses are doubled and distance between them is reduced to half?

20 a) Establish a relation between g and G

b) Differentiate between mass and weight
g and G
