Chapter I
Introduction
more privileged families work less intensely because they want to and are
seeking financial independence (Hovdhaugen, 2013; Triventi, 2014). There are
several reasons that drive tertiary students to have part time employment. Most
of the students think that their study costs are higher than they expected. Parents
feel stressed to pay the expensive tuition fees and other living costs. Thus, they
try to find ways to finance their own studies and to save money. They are mainly
employed in the hospitality or retail industries which have high staff turnover. Part
time work for students has advantages as well as disadvantages. Understanding
the positive and negative consequences of taking a part time job is important for
students.
There are various factors that motivate tertiary students to work part-time.
The majority of students believe that their study costs are higher than they
anticipated. Parents are stressed because of the high tuition fees and other living
expenses. As a result, they try to find ways to support their own studies while
also saving money. They are generally employed in high-turnover industries such
as hospitality or retail. Part-time work for students has both perks and cons.
Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of working part-time is critical for
students.
According to studies, students who work part-time while studying perform
better academically than other students who do not work. Part-time work can
provide extra cash while also allowing university students to get work experience.
The most significant aspect is the skillset, such as working in an industry to
enhance communication skills, teamwork abilities, and time management.
The purpose of this research will conduct a study to know the effect of part
time jobs to the student, to understand the situation and importance of part time
jobs, whether it can be a long-term solution or a short-term solution to the
financial needs of the student, or it can be helpful in terms of development of
skills of the student. This research will also discuss the effectiveness of part time
jobs in students, the advantages and disadvantages of the part time jobs to the
student, and if this will hone the enhancement of their skills.

The research will evaluate the overall concept using this method, ‘paradigm’ as a
research.
Definition of Terms
The following are the terms that were defined based on how they were
used in the study:
Part-time job
Part-time job is one that requires less hours per week than a full-
time job. They operate in shifts. Shifts are frequently rotating. It is a flexible
employment arrangement in which the employee works fewer than full-
time hours.
Academic performance
Academic achievement, often known as academic performance,
refers to the extent to which a student, instructor, or institution has met
their short or long-term educational objectives. Academic achievement is
demonstrated by the completion of educational benchmarks such as
secondary school diplomas and bachelor's degrees.
Productive
Productivity relates to their efforts and abilities to complete their
academics efficiently. This includes their time management skills, ability to
prioritize, and overall contribution to academic performance. Productivity is
the efficiency of production of goods or services expressed by some
measure.
KALAYAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 11
Sustainable
Sustainability is a societal aim that refers to people's ability to
coexist on Earth for an extended period of time. Specific definitions of this
phrase are difficult to come to terms with. They have evolved in response
to literature, context, and time.
Efficient
Efficiency is the often-measurable ability to avoid wasting materials,
energy, efforts, money, and time while performing a task. In a more
general sense, it is the ability to do things well, successfully, and without
waste.

Chapter 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
A. Foreign Literature
Nowadays, students who are working part time jobs are not a matter of
choice but a necessity. Like a third world country like the Philippines. In other
countries like the United States of America, students working part time jobs are
required because students are trained by their parents to be independent. But in
our country Philippines students working part time jobs are essential. Essential to
support their education and essential to support their family too. In other words,
students working part time jobs in different countries depend on the situation.
In recent years, studies found that the student working part time job is
more effectively functional and it can easily develop good communication,
customer care, practical skills and efficiency in team working. (Lucas & Lamont,
1998; Curtis & Lucas, 2001). Students working part time can have direct
experiences relatively to enhance and improve their knowledge academically and
positively enhance their career opportunities in the future (Harvey, 2000; Devlin,
James & Grigg, 2008; Noni’s & Hudson, 2006.
Local Literature
One study conducted by Alcantara and Ramos (2018) entitled "The Impact
of Part-Time Work on the Academic Performance of Senior High School Students
in the Philippines” found that there is a significant negative relationship between
the number of hours spent on part-time work and the academic performance of
senior high school students. The study also revealed that students who work
part-time tend to have lower grades compared to those who do not work.
Overall, these studies suggest that part-time work can have a negative
impact on the academic performance of students. However, it is important to note
that the results may vary depending on the individual circumstances of each
student.
B. Foreign Studies
Students working part time jobs are considered significant. Exposure and
familiarity to the work and workplace gives importance and positive factor and
impact to the student working part time job. It also gives a positive effect to the
student working while studying the value of work, discipline and being
responsible especially in handling their salary. They are more committed to their
job and dedicated to studying harder. This also includes a student working part
KALAYAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 14
time job that is more ready to embrace challenges and good in time
management.
Hence, students working part time jobs are considered significant, but it
has a negative impact too. Stress and pressure are one great factor. This affects
the physical and mental health of the student working part-time jobs. It can create
a negative impact on the students in their academic performance. Most likely
miss lectures in school, quizzes, and other school activities because their focus is
divided between work and studies.
In some studies, students working part time jobs often have conflict
demands between work and studies. (Journal of Education and work 11 (1), 41 -
56 - 1998). Meaning students flexibility is in greater demand of pressure and
increasingly stressful to them.
Some studies focus on both the long - term and short - term effects of
students working part time jobs simultaneously academically but also in their
behaviors in terms of grades may influence. (American Educational Research
Journal 37 (4), 943 - 969, 2000). Research added, high school students who
work competently at paid jobs tend to achieve lower grades in academic courses.
The research also mentions the dropping - out of the students working as part
time jobs the increase and unavoidable absenteeism because working students
show less interest in studying and more focus in their part time jobs. (American
Educational Research Journal 26 (3), 353 - 383, 1989).
C. Local Studies
There are limited local studies on the effect of part-time jobs on the
academic performance of senior high school students in the Philippines.
However, a study conducted by the Philippines Institute for Development Studies
(PIDS) in 2015 found that students who work part-time jobs have lower academic
KALAYAAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL 15
performance compared to those who do not work. The study surveyed 1,200
senior high school students from public schools in Metro Manila and found that
students who work part-time jobs have lower grades in Math, Science, and
English. The study also found that students who work more than 20hours per
week have significantly lower grades compared to those who work less than 20
hours per week.
However, it is important to note that the studies mentioned above are not
specific to Kalayaan National High School and may not necessarily reflect the
situation of students in the said school. Further research is needed to determine
the effect of part-time jobs on the academic performance of students in Kalayaan
National High School.
D. Synthesis
However, the studies and research students working part time jobs are
presented. The advantages and Disadvantages are being discussed, carefully
studied, and outlined. Based on finding the related studies and literature of
students having part time jobs is to be able to understand the importance, the
situation, and benefits of a part time job for the student.
