11 Coordinate Geometry of Straight Lines

Challenging Exercise 11

1. In the figure, A(−3 , 1) and B(−5 , −4) are two of the

vertices of a parallelogram ABCD, where D is a point
on the x-axis. It is given that the diagonals AC and BD
intersect at a point with equal x- and y-coordinates. Find
the coordinates of C.

2. In the figure, QR is a vertical line segment. The coordinates of Q are (6 , 9). P is a point on the
y-axis such that P is equidistant from O, R and Q.

(a) Find the coordinates of P and R.

(b) Is △OPR an equilateral triangle? Explain your answer.

3. In the figure, the coordinates of P and Q are (–4 , 3) and (0 , 7) respectively. The slope of PR is
3 . It is given that PR = RQ. Express the slope of RQ in surd form.

(Hint: Extend QR, QP and RP to cut the x-axis respectively.)

4. In the figure, a pair of perpendicular lines  1 and  2 cut the y-axis at (0 , −8) and (0 , 2)
respectively. It is given that they intersect at a point on the positive x-axis.  3 is a straight line
passing through (20 , 10) and parallel to  1 .

(a) Find the slopes of  1 and  2 .

(b) Find the point of intersection of  2 and  3 .

5. In the figure, Y is the point on the line segment joining P(5 , 7) and R(–4 , –20) such that
PY : YR = 2 : 1. X is the mid-point of PQ, and XR is a vertical line segment that meets QY at N.
Find QN : NY.

(Hint: Consider the relationship among the x-coordinates of Q, X and P.)
