Instructions
Questions do not necessarily carry equal marks. To help you manage your time during this
examination, a maximum time for each question is suggested. If you remain within these times
you should have about 10 minutes left to review your work.
Write your answers in blue or black pen. You may use pencil in graphs and diagrams only.
Write your answers in the spaces provided in this booklet. You may lose marks if you do not do so.
Label any extra work clearly with the question number and part.
The superintendent will give you a copy of the Formulae and Tables booklet. You must return it at
the end of the examination. You are not allowed to bring your own copy into the examination.
You may lose marks if your solutions do not include supporting work.
You may lose marks if you do not include the appropriate units of measurement, where relevant.
You may lose marks if you do not give your answers in simplest form, where relevant.

Question 1 (Suggested maximum time: 5 minutes)
A 1-litre carton is full of milk. The milk is poured into two cups, as follows:
of the litre is poured into cup A and of the litre is poured into cup B.
(a) Which cup contains more milk? Tick (9) the correct answer below.
Cup A Cup B
(c) Calculate the ratio of the volume of milk in cup A to the volume of milk in cup B.
Give your answer in the form ∶ , where , ∈ ℕ.

Question 2 (Suggested maximum time: 10 minutes)
(a) Ms. Owens gave her Economics class an exam. In addition to their individual exam results,
she gave them the averages for the whole class, which were as follows:
(i) Which average would tell a student whether they were in the top half or the
bottom half of the class? Give a reason for your answer.
(ii) These averages were calculated based on the 20 students who sat the exam.
One student, David, was absent on the day of the exam and he sat it upon his
return to school. David scored 48% in the exam. Calculate the new class mean
when David’s result is included. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.

(b) Ms. Owens asked her class to investigate how the price of diesel has changed over the first
two decades of this century. The students do some research and gather the data in the
table below:
(i) Given that the percentage increase between 2010 and 2015 is 28·44%, calculate
the price of a litre of petrol in 2015 and fill it into the table above.
Give your answer to the nearest cent.
(ii) One student suggests that if they calculate the percentage increase between 2000
and 2010 and add it to the percentage increase from 2010 to 2020, they will get the
overall percentage increase from 2000 to 2020.
Ms. Owens tells them that this method is not correct.
Do you agree with Ms. Owens? Use calculations to justify your answer.

Question 3 (Suggested maximum time: 10 minutes)
(i) Explain why the cylindrical part of the capsule has a height
of 21 mm.
(iii) Each capsule is filled to 80% capacity and the company fills 20 000 of these
capsules every hour. Calculate the volume of medicine required by the company
each hour. Give your answer in the form × 10 , where 1 ≤ < 10, ∈ ℕ.

(b) The pharmaceutical company are doing research on the effectiveness of this drug.
They measure the level of pain relief experienced over a period of time, after a person
takes the drug. The values recorded are graphed on the coordinate grid below.
(ii) The values graphed above are shown in the table below. Using these values,
investigate if the graph represents a quadratic function. Give a reason for your
answer.

Question 6 (Suggested maximum time: 10 minutes)
(a) A jeweller is clearing stock and has a sale on a batch of identical gold rings and chains. On
Friday, she sold three rings and eight chains for a total of €350. On Saturday, she sold five
rings and eleven chains for a total of €518.
(i) If the price of a ring is € and the price of a chain is € , write two equations in
terms of and to represent this information.
(iii) Solve these equations to find the price of a ring and price of a chain.
