Subject: English for Academic and Professional Purposes

Grade Level: Grade 12

Objective: Differentiates language used in academic texts from various

disciplines, uses knowledge of text structure to clean the information
he/she needs, and uses various techniques in summarizing a variety of
academic texts.

Learning across the curriculum:

1. Science - Differentiating scientific language and summarizing scientific research

articles.

2. Social Studies - Analyzing historical documents and summarizing key events.

3. Mathematics - Interpreting mathematical equations and summarizing problem-

solving strategies.

Engage:

1. Show a short video clip of a scientific experiment and ask students to identify the
scientific terms used.

2. Display a historical document and ask students to identify the key events
mentioned.

3. Present a mathematical problem and ask students to explain the steps taken to
solve it.

Explore:

Activity 1 - Differentiating Academic Language

Materials: Academic texts from various disciplines

Instructions:

1. Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with an academic text
from a specific discipline.

2. Ask the groups to identify the discipline based on the language used in the text.

3. Have each group present their findings to the class.

Rubric:

Criteria: Identification of discipline based on language used

Points: 5

Assessment Questions:

1. What are the key features of academic language?

2. How does academic language differ across disciplines?

Activity 2 - Summarizing Academic Texts

Materials: Academic texts from various disciplines, graphic organizers

Instructions:

1. Provide each student with an academic text and a graphic organizer.

2. Instruct the students to read the text and use the graphic organizer to summarize
the main ideas and supporting details.

3. Allow students to share and discuss their summaries with a partner.

Rubric:

Criteria: Accuracy of main ideas and supporting details in the summary

Points: 10
Assessment Questions:

1. Why is it important to summarize academic texts2. What strategies can be used to

identify the main ideas and supporting details in a text?

Activity 3 - Using Text Structure to Clean Information

Materials: Academic texts from various disciplines, highlighters

Instructions:

1. Distribute academic texts to each student and provide highlighters.

2. Instruct the students to read the text and use the highlighters to identify the
different text structures used.

3. Ask the students to clean the information by highlighting the key points within each
text structure.

Rubric:

Criteria: Identification and highlighting of text structures and key points

Points: 8

Assessment Questions:

1. How does understanding text structure help in comprehending academic texts?

2. What are the common text structures found in academic writing?

Activity 4 - Analyzing Literary Texts

Materials: Literary texts from various genres

Instructions:

1. Provide each student with a literary text from a different genre (e.g., novel, poem,
play).

2. Instruct the students to read the text and identify the literary devices and
techniques used.

3. Ask the students to summarize the main themes and analyze the author's use of
language to convey meaning.

Rubric:

Criteria: Identification of literary devices and techniques, summary of main

themes, analysis of language use

Points: 5 (each criterion)

Assessment Questions:

1. How do authors use language to convey meaning in literary texts?

2. What are some common literary devices and techniques used in different genres?

Activity 5 - Summarizing Historical Research

Materials: Historical research articles

Instructions:

1. Provide each student with a historical research article.

2. Instruct the students to read the article and use note-taking techniques to
summarize the key findings and arguments.

3. Ask the students to present their summaries to the class and engage in a
discussion on the significance of the research.

Rubric:
Criteria: Accuracy of key findings and arguments in the summary, clarity of
presentation

Points: 5 (each criterion)

Assessment Questions:

1. Why is it important to summarize historical research?

2. How can note-taking techniques help in summarizing complex information?

Activity 6 - Interpreting Artistic Works

Materials: Artistic works (paintings, sculptures, photographs, etc.)

Instructions:

1. Display a variety of artistic works in the classroom.

2. Instruct the students to analyze each work and identify the artistic elements and
techniques used.

3. Ask the students to summarize the main themes and interpret the meaning behind
each work.

Rubric:

Criteria: Identification of artistic elements and techniques, summary of main

themes, interpretation of meaning

Points: 5 (each criterion)

Assessment Questions:

1. How do artists use different elements and techniques to convey meaning in their
works?

2. What can we learn from analyzing and interpreting artistic works?

Note: The activities above are designed to help students differentiate language
used in academic texts from various disciplines, use knowledge of text
structure to clean the information they need, and use various techniques in
summarizing a variety of academic texts. These activities promote critical
thinking, analysis, and effective communication skills.

Explain:

1. Teach the concept of academic language by discussing the characteristics and

features of academic writing in various disciplines.

2. Engage students in a discussion on the importance of summarizing academic

texts and the strategies that can be used to identify main ideas and supporting
details.

Elaborate:

1. Have students work in pairs and analyze an academic article from a chosen
discipline. They should identify the main ideas, supporting details, and text structures
used.

2. Conduct a debate or discussion where students summarize academic texts from

different disciplines and defend their summaries.

Evaluate:

1. Assess students' ability to differentiate academic language by giving them a short

passage and asking them to identify the discipline based on the language used.

2. Evaluate students' summarizing skills by providing them with an academic text

and asking them to create a concise summary using appropriate text structures.

Assignment:
