strengthen slope protection of roads iii) Repairing and construction of bridges, culverts and approaches iv)
Earthwork for maintaining the design width of rural road type-1 (R1) v) Environmental management to
make the road development work sustainable
The objectives of this consultancy is to prepare a training curriculum on structural design of Aggregate
Sand (AS) Road Using AS technology including alternative flexible and rigid pavement designs and
structures up to 20 meters span and conduct training sessions in order to develop the technical expertise of
LGED and CARE Engineers. The major tasks of the consultant are: i) Review CARE-LGED
implemented AS roads and structures in field and office, ii) Develop structural design of flexible
pavement with Aggregate Sand (AS) technology for rural road type-1 (R1), iii) Develop structural design
of flexible pavement alternative to existing design considering cost effectiveness with respect to traffic
volume for rural road type –1(R1), iv) Develop structural design of rigid pavement rural road type-1 (R1),
T-beam bridge with pile foundation up to 20m span, multi-vent box culvert, u-drain with and without
surcharge and pipe culvert, (v) explore the possibilities of introducing pre-cast units in different rural road
structures, (vi) prepare a training curriculum based on the above mentioned structural design step by step
with detailing, (vii) facilitate one TOT training course of 4 to 5 days long with preparation of necessary

Flood Proofing Project (FPP) is a 5 years project under the umbrella of Integrated Food Security Program
(IFSP). This program is funded by the USAID. The goal of IFSP is to promote and protect the food and
livelihood security of vulnerable groups in under developed/high-risk rural and urban areas of
Bangladesh. The project is being implemented in two different flood environment areas i.e. in char and
haor areas. The project has planned and designed rural infrastructures to be implemented in this flooding
environment. As per FPP policy, the existing village roads or approach roads are to be improved to
facilitate communication as well as refuge for the people of concerned areas. Appurtenant bridges/culverts
will be constructed in the improved roads. Mainly four types of bridges are planned to be constructed: i)
Low cost portable bridge ii) Low cost footbridge iii) Box culvert and iv) Pipe culvert or U drains.
Review all design & drawings, road structure design manual, visit FPP sites, explore the scope to adopt
the local technology and indigenous material in planning and design, to develop a design manual
describing site and type selection procedures, prepare software for designing, cost estimating of all
mentioned structures, conducting 2 days training to orient 30 staff of CARE, LGED and PNGO on
software, design and drawings.
