LEED® Certification is for projects, not products, but 3M products used as project materials can
contribute toward the points needed for your project certification. 3M Industrial Adhesives and
Tape Division (IATD) has a number of products that can help contribute to the LEED® credits
needed for your project certificate.
Tape products generally fall into two categories of LEED® credits – Compliance Credits that
require all related materials to meet a certain emission requirements or Contribution Credits that
require a financial calculation to determine what percentage of the project’s materials meet
relevant requirements and proprietary information and on the manufacturing source.
3M IATD products are more valuable in obtaining Compliance Credits for LEED® projects in
the Indoor Environmental Quality Category. A partial list of products eligible for Compliance
Credits can be found on the following pages of this bulletin. Most tapes qualify for the 1 credit.
Products not listed may be compliant, please contact 3M for further information.
Contribution Credits are determined by calculating at the total cost of project materials that
contribute to the Materials and Resources Category criteria for recycled content and regional
manufacturing. Tapes typically are a small percent of the total material cost of a project.
Recycled content in tape products is almost always zero. 3M’s manufacturing locations are
considered proprietary information. Tape products will not help toward Contribution Credits but
can be very helpful in obtaining Compliance Credits.
Building products listed below meet the criteria to contribute to the Environmental Quality
(“EQ”) Credit 4.1: Low-Emitting Materials: Adhesives & Sealants under the United States
