Title: A Tale of Coils and Magnets

Hypothesis: To prove that magnetic induction will occur, a coil will be passed through a
magnet in the following ways: horizontal while perpendicular to the magnetic field, and
horizontal while parallel. Conversely, the coil will be placed inside the magnetic field
and held stationary orientated perpendicularly and parallel, then moved vertically in both
orientations. After which, the coil will be rotated while inside the magnetic field.

Overview: A coil was passed through the magnet horizontally while orientated
perpendicular and parallel to the magnetic field. It was also held in place inside the
magnetic field while in the same orientations, then moved vertically. The coil was also
rotated while inside the magnetic field as well. An electric current happened during
some of the orientations and actions performed but not all.

Procedures: See Experiment Instructions

Data Table: See Experiment Data Table

Uncertainty & Error:

Considerations:
1) The accuracy of the various angles at which the coils were placed are called into
question as they appeared to move imprecisely and “jumped” ever so slightly
about +/- 0.05 degrees. This may have caused inaccuracies in predicting if an
electric current would occur while the coil was either perpendicular or parallel to
the magnetic field.
2) In a physical environment: The speed at which the coil would be traveling would
have to be carefully monitored along with the orientation at the which the coil
would be. Careful consideration would also have to be taken into account when
monitoring the occurrence of an electric current when the polar ends of the
magnet are switched.

Conclusion/Summary: In this experiment, to prove that magnetic induction will occur,

a coil will be passed through a magnet in the following ways: horizontal while
perpendicular to the magnetic field, and horizontal while parallel. Conversely, the coil
will be placed inside the magnetic field and held stationary orientated perpendicularly
and parallel, then moved vertically in both orientations. After which, the coil will be
rotated while inside the magnetic field. This was done by orienting and moving the coil
in the prescribed methods through the magnet. The results indicated that when the coil
was perpendicular to the magnet field, magnetic induction would occur while the
opposite happened when the coil was either parallel, completely inside the field, or
rotating while completely inside the field. A noticeable occurrence was that when the
polar ends of the magnet were switched, for a brief moment, there was magnetic

induction due to the changing of the magnetic flux. Some errors that may have occurred
with this experiment include possible misjudgment of the angle of the coil. In the future,
careful observation and higher quality picture should be considered to enhance the
experiment.

Application: Given that magnetic induction happens particularly when the polar ends of
the magnet switch while the coil is inside of the magnetic field, it would suffice to say
that rotating the magnet itself quickly, much like an alternator, would generate enough
electricity to power various things, such as light bulbs or oscillating fans.
