1
Topic
An investigation into the ban of sugary drinks by the government in
schools and its effects on Mount Saint Joseph Catholic High school’s
Tuck-shop and students.

2
Objectives

 To determine how the banning of the sugary drink affect

consumers choices.

 To identify reasons why the government placed a ban on sugary

drink in schools.

 To examine how the banning of sugary drink affects the

profitability of the Mount Saint Joseph High School tuck-shop.

3
Background information

The minister of health of Jamaica, Dr. Hon. Christopher Tufton,

implemented a policy to restrict certain types of sugary drinks in
schools. This was addressed during his contribution to the 2018-2019
debate in the House of Representatives on June 5th 2018.

There has been a high obesity level amongst our age. Now, the
standards will focus on reducing the intake of saturated fats cholesterol
sodium and sugar, increasing vegetable and fruit consumption.

This is a problem because consumers are supposed to be able to take

responsibility for their own action whilst cutting down on the drink
would be more effective than banning them.
The profitability of Mount Saint Joseph high’s tuck-shop is affected
decrease in sales. They receive less money than they would normally
get with sugary drinks in stock.

The banning of sugary drinks affects the consumer’s choice, it also has
an effect on the society and All large drink companies may lose a
considerable amount of money due to this ban.

The act can affect society both positively and negatively. These effects
are relatively long term, it can affect us positively by creating healthier
people for the future, resulting in longer living. It also affects students,
where as they might see it as being without having the choice of
purchasing what they really want.

4
Methodology

Throughout this research, data was collected by questionnaires and

interview questions.
The questionnaire focused on ways how the banning of sugary drinks
affected them. The researcher wanted get first-hand information on how
did act affected the tuck-shop. All the financial transactions pass
through the manager’s hands, so the researcher decided interview the
manager.

The advantages of questionnaires are: comparability, inexpensive and

they are practical. Comparability means data can be used to compare
and contrast other research and may be used to measure change.
Apart from being inexpensive, questionnaires are also a practical way to
gather data. They can be targeted to groups of your choosing and
managed in various ways. They offer a way to gather vast amounts of
data on any subject. They can be used in a wide variety of ways. But,
there are disadvantages such as; dishonest answers- respondents may
not be truthful with their answer. There can also be difference in
understanding and interpretation-the trouble with not presenting
questions to users face-to-face is that each may have different
interpretations of your questions.
An interview is essentially a structured conversation where one
participant asks questions, and the other provides answer. “interview”
refers to a one-to-one conversation between an interviewer and an
interviewee. The advantages of interviews are: they allow more detailed
questions to be asked and they achieve a higher response rate and the
dis advantages are they can be very time-consuming: setting up,
interview, transcribing, analyzing, feedback, report.

9
Conclusion
In concluding, children of The Mount Saint Joseph Catholic High
School are being affected by the banning of sugary drinks. Consumers
may be biased to their health by choosing the drink that would give
them a ‘sugar rush' only because it may satisfy their taste than what will
satisfy their wellbeing. The ban placed by the government in schools
because health minister noted that there was evidence that excessive
consumption of drinks with added sugar helped to generate non-
communicable diseases and that it increased the number of obesity in
adolescents. The profits of the Mount Saint Joseph Catholic High
School were affected however because the money being made with the
absence if sugary drinks could be doubled as a result of high demand.

10
Recommendations
In order for the government to be successful they should think about
certain steps. Firstly, to educate children about health risk related to the
intake of too much sugar. Secondly to educate the parents about health
risk related to the intake of too much sugar because the child might not
drink sugary drinks at school but drink it home. They also purchase
these drinks at shops and supermarkets. This gives them the push to
continue informing the children that sugar may interfere with how the
body fights diseases. Bacteria and yeast feed on sugar, making excess
glucose in the body which leads to organisms building up to cause
infections. Lastly, to restrict companies from making sugary drinks.
The government could place a ban on company that make sugary
drinks or they should produce drinks within the specified amount
of sugar.
