Lesson Plan: Present Continuous and Present Perfect Tenses for Beginner Level Spoken English
Objective: By the end of this lesson, students will be able to accurately use the present
continuous and present perfect tenses in various contexts related to descriptions, family albums,
reading, writing, and role-playing.
Warm-up (5 minutes): Begin the class by engaging the students in a brief conversation about
their daily activities using the present continuous tense. Encourage them to share what they are
currently doing or planning to do later in the day.
Description Activity (15 minutes): a. Provide the students with a series of pictures or images
depicting various scenes, such as people playing sports, cooking, or working. In pairs or small
groups, students will take turns describing what they see using the present continuous tense.
Encourage the use of adjectives and action verbs.
Family Album Activity (10 minutes): a. Ask students to bring their family albums or personal
photos to class (if possible). In pairs, students will describe the people and activities in the
pictures using the present continuous tense. Encourage them to ask questions about each other's
family members to practice conversation skills.
Reading and Writing Activity (15 minutes): a. Provide the students with short texts or dialogues in
the present continuous tense. Students will read the texts aloud, paying attention to the usage of
the tense. Then, they will practice writing their own sentences or mini-dialogues using the
present continuous tense, incorporating vocabulary words related to their hobbies or interests.
Changes, Experiences, and Accomplishments Discussion (10 minutes): a. Engage the students in a
discussion about changes, experiences, and accomplishments in their lives using the present
perfect tense. Prompt them to share personal achievements, trips they have taken, or skills they
have learned. Model example sentences to guide their responses.
Reading and Writing Activity (15 minutes): a. Provide students with short paragraphs or articles in
the present perfect tense. Students will read the passages silently and then answer
comprehension questions based on the text. Next, they will write sentences or short paragraphs
about their own experiences using the present perfect tense.
Role Play Activity (15 minutes): a. Divide the students into pairs or small groups and assign them
specific roles, such as a tourist and a hotel receptionist, or a job seeker and an employer.
Students will engage in role-playing conversations using the present perfect tense to talk about
experiences, qualifications, or achievements related to their assigned roles.
Wrap-up (5 minutes): Recap the main points of the lesson, highlighting the usage of the present
continuous and present perfect tenses. Encourage students to practice using these tenses in their
everyday conversations and written work outside of the classroom.
