ORIGINS OF THE PHILIPPINES

According to the myth, from Tagalog version. Philippines archipelago was created of the

two gods. Bathala, the god of sky and Aman Sinaya the goddess of the sea. They been a rival for

a long time, day by day, they try to fight each other but one day, when Aman Siya decided to

send her tempests to the sky, that cause a wild commution when Bathala know that he

immediately threw a giant boulder that came from the top of the mountains. And from that

scenario it created a thousand of islands and one of that is the Philippine archipelago. (Scribd,

Philippines, an island country in Southeast Asia in the Western Pacific Ocean. It is an

archipelago consisting of 7,641 islands. Manila is their capital; however, Quezon City is the most

populous city. They are both part of the National Capital Region (Metro Manila), located in

Luzon which is the largest island among the two, the Visayas and Mindanao. (Cullinane et al.,

2023)

During the pre-colonial period it believes that Negrito, proto - Malay, and Malay peoples

inhabited the Philippine Archipelago around 30,000 years ago. In that period migrations occurred

over thousands of years. Aside from that the social and political organization of the population in

the islands evolved into a common pattern, from the basic unit of

settlement which is the barangay, formerly a kinship it is a group headed

by the datu. Within the barangay is the social divisions includes nobles,

freemen, and dependents, including landless agricultural workers, indepted individuals, and war

captives. Arab traders from Malay and Borneo introduced Islam in Southern islands in the 14th

century and the influences extended especially in North Luzon. Also, the Indonesian brought

Islam to the Philippines by traders and proselytizers. In the 16th century, Islam was recognized

in the Sulu Archipelago and it spread from Mindanao to Manila area in 1565.

Ferdinand Magellan is the one who led the Spanish expedition to the Philippines in 1521,

he is the first European who visit the region after that another Spanish expedition followed

including one from New Spain (Mexico) under Ruy Lopez De Villalobos. (Lorenzed, 2016) The

name Philippines was coming from King Philip II of Spain when the Spanish explorer arrived in

our islands in 1542 which is Ruy Lopez De Villalobos. In 1542 Felipinas was the only name of

the islands of Leyte and Samar but in 1543 explorer Ruy Lopez Villalobos presumptuously

named the two islands of Leyte and Samar as Las Islas Filipinas (The Philippine Islands).

Spanish would like to colonize the other islands that we know and by that the entire archipelago

would know under that name.

As a Filipino Citizen, we should know our own history because if we know the past. It

will help us understand the past and where we came from. It will also give us idea about our

country's culture and traditions. In that way we will appreciate the Philippines' natural beauty and

resources. And lastly, we will understand our history that can help us to solve problems in the

present and future (Davis, 2014). A one country with its own identity is good

Moreover, the today's era is the product of the past. It means that past has a

great impact to the present, there is no present if there is no past. Past is

important since it gave us idea or knowledge about what happened to the

past and to the present. It also gave us the tool to analyze and explain problem from the past. As

a student, I realized in this activity that even though we're colonized by other others, still, we

have our own culture, discoveries, tradition. From this activity I learned how Philippine

archipelago was created according to the myth, the things that happened during pre-colonial

period and etc. I am happy that by this activity I gained knowledge about the origins of the

Philippines.
