Study, Cura Procedure and 3 D Printing Excercise
Objective
Prepare
The prepare stage is the first stage. The goal of this stage is to load and configure your 3D
models for 3D Printing.
3D models loaded on the build plate are displayed solid, in the color corresponding to the
material selected to print with. Models not fully within the printable area have a striped grey
overlay. Non-printable areas on the build plate are displayed with a grey border, this space is
necessary for build plate adhesion and support structures.
1. Stage menu. Contains the printer selection, configuration and print settings panel.
2. Stage. The current stage is highlighted
3. Non-printable area. The area is represented by a grey shadow on the build plate and
is caused by build plate adhesion and support settings
4. Non-printable model. Due to parts being in non-printable areas
5. Printable model. Displayed in the color corresponding to the material selected to print
with
Layer view
When the layer view opens, your sliced 3D model is visible, represented by every print and
travel path Ultimaker Cura generated. These are the actual print paths executed by the printer
when the print job gets sent.
The stage menu now has options to change the current view, the color scheme panel, and the
print settings panel. The right side shows the layer slider and the bottom slider control the
simulation view. The action panel in the bottom left now contains the 'print over network’
action.
1. Stage menu. This contains the view types, color scheme panel, and print settings panel
2. Stage. The current stage is highlighted
3. Layer slider input. This uses the numeric input to jump to the desired layer
4. The layer slider. This can be dragged to drag a layer range up and down
5. Layer slider handle. Both the top and bottom handle can be dragged to specify the
visible layer range
6. Print information. Hover the mouse over the icon to view detailed print time
information per printed feature
7. Print over network. This will send the print job directly to the printer over the network.
Non-networked printers have options to save to removable disk or save to file instead
8. Path slider. This indicates the current position of the simulation view. This handle can
be dragged or moved with the ‘arrow keys’ or ‘shift + arrow keys’
9. Start simulation. This starts the simulation of the currently active layer to provide
visual feedback on the printing process
Monitor
The monitor views 3D models sent to the printer or printer group. The status of every printer
in the group can be inspected individually as well as the shared printer queue.
4. Click on the "Open File" or "Add" button to import the 3D model to print. Ultimaker
Cura supports various file formats, including STL and OBJ.
5. Once the 3D model is loaded, use the software's tools to position, rotate, and scale the
model to fit the build volume or orient it as desired. For a coin with a 25mm diameter
and 1.5mm thickness. Use the scale and move tools to adjust the size and position of
the model as needed.
6. Click on the "Custom" button to access the print settings, where the parameters such
as layer height, print speed, infill density, and support structures can be configured.
13. Use the control interface in 3D printer to select and initiate the print job using the G-
Code file.
14. Monitor the Print
Once the print is complete, carefully remove the object from the print bed.
3D Printing of a circular coin
Aim:
To Built a 3D Modelled part into a 3D printed coin of diameter 25 mm and a thickness
of 1.5mm.
Apparatus Required:
Ender Fused Deposition Modeling Macine.
Procedure:
1. Import Your 3D Model: Import or open the 3D model of the coin that you want to
print. Make sure it's in a format that Cura can recognize, such as STL or OBJ.
2. Position and Scale: After importing the model, you may need to position and scale it
to match your desired specifications. In your case, you want a coin with a 25mm
diameter and 1.5mm thickness. Use the scale and move tools to adjust the size and
position of the model as needed.
3. Set Print Quality: Choose your desired print quality and layer height. For a coin, you
may want to select a high-quality setting. This may involve adjusting parameters like
layer height, infill density, and wall thickness.
4. Add Support Structures (if needed): Depending on the design and overhangs in your
model, you may need to add support structures to ensure a successful print. Ultimaker
Cura can automatically generate supports for you.
5. Choose Printing Material: Select the material you intend to use for your coin. This
will affect printing temperature, cooling, and other settings.
6. Adjust Print Settings: Configure additional print settings as needed, such as print
speed, temperature, and shell thickness. These settings will depend on your specific 3D
printer and material.
7. Slice Your Model: Once all the settings are configured, click the "Slice" button.
Ultimaker Cura will process your 3D model and generate the G-code instructions for
your printer.
8. Review and Save G-code: Review the sliced model in the preview window to ensure
it looks correct. If everything looks good, save the G-code to a removable storage
device (SD card, USB drive) that's compatible with your 3D printer.
9. Load G-code onto Your 3D Printer: Insert the storage device with the saved G-code
into your 3D printer.
10. Print: Start the print on your 3D printer, following your printer's user manual for
instructions.
11. Monitor the Print: Keep an eye on the print to ensure it progresses smoothly. If any
issues arise, you may need to make adjustments.
12. Post-Processing: Once the print is complete, carefully remove the coin from the build
plate and remove any support structures if you added them. You may also want to do
some finishing touches or post-processing to achieve the desired finish.
