CPS Assignment 2 PDF

This document outlines an assignment for a course on biorefineries. The assignment requires students to: 1. Propose a biorefinery system to produce a selected biofuel by choosing a suitable feedstock and outlining the pretreatment, conversion, and purification processes. 2. The proposed biorefinery must be located in Malaysia and utilize locally abundant feedstocks. 3. Students will submit a report on their proposed biorefinery system and be evaluated based on their identification of the biofuel, selection and justification of feedstock and pretreatment processes, and elaboration of the biorefinery system details.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

This group assignment is a part of the continuous assessment. This assignment evaluates the student's
ability to relate all topics taught in this course that can be bind together in a form of a biorefinery concept.

KNOWLEDGE PROFILE

This assignment/project/design addresses one (1) course outcome and one (1) programme outcomes (PO)
which are mapped to complex engineering problem characteristics (WP) and the required knowledge
profiles (WK) as shown in Table 1.

3.0 LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THE ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

At the end of this project the students should be able to :

1. Explain the biorefinery concept.
2. Choose the suitable biomass for the production of selected biofuel.
3. Propose a biorefinery system consisting of pretreatment, conversion and purification steps.
4. Submit a complete report.

4.0 DESCRIPTION

Biofuel is a form of fuel that is obtained from biomass, which can originate from plant or algal matter, as
well as waste. Biofuel is widely recognized as a renewable energy source due to its ability to be rapidly
supplied with biomass or waste material, distinguishing it from non-renewable fossil fuels like petroleum,
coal, and natural gas. In order to produce biofuel, the feedstock must undergo multiple processing steps
which may comprise of pretreatment, conversion, purification and/or product upgrading.

5.0 YOUR TASK

In this assignment, students need to identify one type of biofuel and propose a biorefinery system by
selecting the suitable feedstock, the conversion process and product purification and/or upgrading to
produce the identified biofuel. The selection of the feedstock and pretreatment method(s) used must be
justified by considering the relevant factors. The conversion of feedstock into identified biofuel must be
elaborated in great detail while the choice of reactor used must also be justified. The downstream process
of the product purification must also included. The proposed biorefinery must be located in Malaysia, hence
utilization of the local abundant feedstock is required.

6.0 SUBMISSION OF ASSIGNMENT/PROJECT/DESIGN

a. This group assignment must consist of not more than three (3) students. The report must properly
written and cited.
b. Complete Assignment 2 in 10 weeks.
c. Late submission will not be entertained and considered as no submission.
d. The assignment should be submitted in a form of report.
e. Group number and FULL name of the group members (with student ID,) should be stated in the
report. Use the following file name format for the assessment submission:
ASSIGNMENT2_Group Number_EH2208X_CBE697
f. The report must be submitted to this email suhaila.sauid.UiTM@analysis.ouriginal.com for
plagiarism checking. The title of email : Assignment 1 CBE697.
7.0 EVALUATION SCHEME

This section summarized the criteria to be evaluated in the assignment/project/design. The detailed rubric
