CMs Mid Term Question Paper

This document appears to be an exam for a composite materials course, asking students to answer questions about composites. The first question is mandatory and asks students to choose the correct answers about anisotropic materials, stiffness matrices, orthotropic materials, and examples of composites. The other questions ask about why alloys are not composites; tensile strength of fibers; classifications and limitations of composites; Hooke's law for isotropic materials; definitions and examples of anisotropic, monoclinic, orthotropic, transversely isotropic, and isotropic materials; and descriptions of manufacturing processes like filament winding and pultrusion. The exam aims to test students' understanding of key concepts in composite materials.

6 Semester Mid-term Exam-2023
Sub: - Composite materials(CMs) Sub Code: - 102609
Time: 2 Hours Total Marks: 20

Answer any four questions in which question no. 1 is mandatory. There are no negative marks.
1. Choose the Correct Answer: [5]
i. Number of independent material constant required to know the behaviour of an
anisotropic material is
(a) 81
(b) 21
(c) 15
(d) 5
ii. The nature of stiffness or compliance matrix is
(a) Symmetric
(b) Skew symmetric
(c) Diagonal
(d) Orthogonal
iii. Total number of planes of material property symmetry for ORTHOTROPIC
materials is:
(a) One
(b) Two
(c) Three
(d) No such plane exists.
iv. Which is NOT an example of composite material:
(a) Wood
(b) Cermets
(c) Mild steel
(d) Bone
v. Laminates are:
(a) Randomly oriented particulate composite.
(b) Preferred oriented particulate composite.
(c) Single layer fibrous composite.
(d) Multiple layer fibrous composite.

2. (a) Why are alloys not considered as composite materials? [2]

(b) The tensile strength of a fiber made from either polymeric or non-polymeric material
is higher as compared to that of its bulk form of same material. Explain. [3]

2. (a) What are composites? Explain the classification of the engineered composites? [3]
(b) Explain any four limitations of composite materials.[2]
3. Explain Hooke’s law for an isotropic material in matrix form when the element is
subjected to both normal and shear stress. Also mention clearly that for such material, there
is neither shear-extension coupling nor shear-shear coupling. [5]

4. What do you mean by anisotropic, monoclinic, orthotropic, transversely isotropic and

isotropic materials? Give an example of each of them. Also, mention the number of
independent material constants required to determine the behaviour of each of these
materials under the application of load. [5]

5. Explain any of the two manufacturing processes of composites: [5]

(a) Filament winding.
(b) Pultrusion.
(c) Resin Transfer Molding (RTM).
(d) Bag moulding.
