A Christmas Carol

Chapter 1
1. How was Scrooge described as a boss and as a citizen in the city?
Scrooge was an excellent Business man. He had an office with his late partner
Marley, called “Marley and Scrooge”. He was hard, clever & mean old man
There was nothing warm or open about him. He lived a secretive, lonely life &
took no interest in other people. Nobody stopped him in the street to ask him
about time or money. Even cats and dogs were afraid of him, they hid whenever
they saw him. He had red eyes, blue thin lips, White frost covered his hair, chin
and his eyebrows.
He was greedy because he was working on the Christmas eve.
He didn’t like Christmas or anyone who celebrates it.
He refused to give money to the two men who came to ask him for charity.

2. The people in the city were afraid to stop scrooge in the street and say “How
are you?” Explain
Because He was a hard, clever & mean old man, There was nothing warm or
open about him. He lived a secretive, lonely life & took no interest in other
people. So nobody stopped him in the street to ask him about time, money or
even asked him how is he doing. cats and dogs were afraid of him also, they hid
whenever they saw him.

3. Scrooge was a greedy man. Explain


Scrooge was a greedy man, that was clear when he was working even in the
Christmas Eve. He refused to give money for the charity when the two men
entered his office asking him for money for the poor people in order to get them
food (meat), drink, clothes and wood for the fire in order to keep them warm,
but he refused.
It also shows when he was annoyed to give Bob his clerk a day off for Christmas
and thought it was stealing to pay him a day while he’s not working.

4. How did Scrooge respond to Fred’s invitation? Why?


When Fred entered Scrooge’s office offering holiday greetings and a happy
Christmas. The grumpy Scrooge responds with a “Bah! Humbug”.
Scrooge Criticized Christmas and any one who celebrates it; He said that
Christmas is a day when you spend too much and you are a year older but not an
hour richer and he turned down Fred’s invitation.

5. Why did the two men visit Scrooge? How did Scrooge react?
the two men entered his office asking him for money for the poor people in
order to get them food (meat), drink, clothes and wood for the fire in order to
keep them warm, but he refused. He stated that there are Workhouses and
Prisons for the poor to go to, and when the two men told him that some of them
might die and not to go there, Scrooge told them that there are too many people
in the world and if some of them die that would be better.
This shows how miser and mean scrooge is.

responds that Fred is too poor to be Happy so Fred told him that he’s too rich to
be angry or sadf in Christmas.

yourself a year older”

and when the two men told him that some of them might die and not to go there,

5. “It’s only once a year”


Bob, Scrooge’s clerk said these words to Scrooge at the end of the day when
they were leaving and closing the office. Scrooge was annoyed to give Bob his
clerk a day off for Christmas and thought it was stealing to pay him a day while
he’s not working so Bob tried to convince him by saying that Christmas comes
only once a year.
