RAIN ALARM
What is a Rain Alarm?
A rain alarm system is a device that detects the presence of
rainwater and produces an audible or visual signal. Rain alarm
systems have various applications in different fields such as
irrigation, automobile, communication and satellite antennas. Rain
alarm systems can help in water conservation, safety,
convenience and protection of equipment from rain damage.

INTRODUCTION
Rain is a natural phenomenon that involves the condensation of
water vapor in the atmosphere and its fall to the earth's surface as
liquid droplets. Rain can be beneficial for agriculture, ecology and
human well-being, but it can also cause problems such as
flooding, erosion, traffic accidents and corrosion. Therefore, it is
useful to have a device that can sense the occurrence of rain and
alert the user accordingly.

OBJECTIVE
The objective of this report is to design and construct a simple
rain alarm system using basic electronic components such as rain
sensor, 555 timer IC, transistor, LED, buzzer and resistors. The
rain alarm system should be able to detect the presence of rain
water on the sensor and produce a sound or light signal.
THEORY
The main component of the rain alarm system is the rain sensor,
which is a device that changes its electrical resistance or
conductivity depending on the amount of moisture on its surface.
There are different types of rain sensors available in the market,
such as hygroscopic disks, tipping buckets, conductance probes
and optical sensors. In this report, we will use a simple rain
sensor made of a piece of bakelite or mica board and aluminium
wire. The aluminium wire is pasted on the board in a zigzag
pattern with small gaps between the wires. The board is then
connected to a power supply and a 555 timer IC.

The 555 timer IC is a versatile integrated circuit that can be used

to generate pulses, oscillations, delays and timers. It has three
operating modes: monostable, astable and bistable. In this report,
we will use the 555 timer IC in its astable mode, which means that
it will produce a continuous stream of square wave pulses with a
fixed frequency and duty cycle. The frequency and duty cycle of
the pulses depend on the values of two resistors (R1 and R2) and
one capacitor (C1) connected to the 555 timer IC.

The output of the 555 timer IC is then fed to a transistor, which

acts as an amplifier and a switch. The transistor can either be in
its cut-off state (no current flows) or in its saturation state
(maximum current flows) depending on the input voltage applied
to its base terminal. The transistor is connected to an LED and a
buzzer in parallel. The LED is a light-emitting diode that emits
light when current passes through it. The buzzer is an
electromechanical device that produces sound when current
passes through it.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
The working principle of the rain alarm system is as follows:

• When there is no rain, the rain sensor acts as an open circuit

and has a very high resistance. This means that there is no
current flowing through it and no voltage drop across it.
Therefore, the input voltage to the 555 timer IC (pin 2) is equal
to the supply voltage (Vcc). This keeps the 555 timer IC in its
stable state and its output voltage (pin 3) is low (0V).
• When there is rain, the rain sensor acts as a closed circuit and
has a very low resistance. This means that there is some
current flowing through it and some voltage drop across it.
Therefore, the input voltage to the 555 timer IC (pin 2) is lower
than the supply voltage (Vcc). This triggers the 555 timer IC
into its unstable state and its output voltage (pin 3) becomes
high (Vcc).
• The high output voltage of the 555 timer IC drives the
transistor into its saturation state and allows maximum current
to flow through it. This activates both the LED and the buzzer,
which produce light and sound signals respectively.
• The output voltage of the 555 timer IC oscillates between high
and low at a fixed frequency and duty cycle determined by R1,
R2 and C1. This creates a pulsating effect on the LED and the
buzzer.
• When there is no more rain, the rain sensor returns to its open
circuit state and has a very high resistance. This restores the
input voltage to the 555 timer IC (pin 2) to equal to the supply
voltage (Vcc). This resets the 555 timer IC to its stable state
and its output voltage (pin 3) becomes low (0V).
• The low output voltage of the 555 timer IC drives the transistor
into its cut-off state and stops the current flow through it. This
deactivates both the LED and the buzzer, which stop
producing light and sound signals respectively.
CONCLUSION
The rain alarm system is a simple and useful device that can
detect the presence of rain water and produce an audible or
visual signal. It can be used for various purposes such as
irrigation, automobile, communication and satellite antennas. It
can help in water conservation, safety, convenience and
protection of equipment from rain damage. The rain alarm system
can be easily constructed using basic electronic components such
as rain sensor, 555 timer IC, transistor, LED, buzzer and
resistors. The rain alarm system works on the principle of change
in resistance or conductivity of the rain sensor due to moisture
and the oscillation of the 555 timer IC in its astable mode.
