‘Grievances of women teachers: Invercargill, June 29. The women teachers of
Southland met to-day and signed a petition to the Minister of Education praying
for equal pay as compared with male teachers and eligibleness (being worthy)
for all positions in the Education service. Among the anomalies (not normal)
referred to was the fact that the women teachers of the country schools get ten
per cent less than a man… also, that a (head) mistress of a large school, while
ranking next to a headmaster, gets the pay of a fifth assistant only (poorly
paid).’
Article in a local newspaper in Southland, NZ 1900.

At this moment of our Empire’s needs I desire to appeal to the women of New
Zealand to assist me in trying to provide any necessaries which may be required
for those portions of the citizen army which are now mobilising for any service
which may be required of them.
My suggestion would be to start a fund in every centre under a small committee
of ladies…
These committees should be prepared to receive contributions, whether in
money (however small the sums), or in kind. If the latter, it appears to me that
we could not do better than follow some of the suggestions made by the
Commandant of the New Zealand Forces in to-day’s papers, in which he
mentions underclothing, flannel shirts, socks, holdalls (containing knife, fork,
and spoon), housewives (to obtain needles, buttons, etc), or contributions of
materials to make these, such as flannel, knitting wool and knitting needles,
American cloth, binding thread and buttons.
Appeal from the Countess of Liverpool, wife of the Governor-General of NZ, 6 th
August 1914.
