The University has a modern well-planned campus situated on Patiala-Chandigarh road at a short distance from the
main city. Sprawling across 316 acres, the campus is away from the din and noise of the city. It presents a splendid sight of
magnificent buildings which include the famous Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan. On December 27, 1967, Dr. Zakir Hussain, the
then President of India laid the foundation stone of Guru Gobind Singh Bhawan, the iconic landmark building of Punjabi
University.
Initially, University jurisdiction area was fixed as the 16 km radius having only 9 colleges. In 1969, it grew into an
affiliating university, with 43 colleges affiliated to it. Now the university caters to the educational needs of nine Districts of
Punjab. Over the time since its inception, the University has evolved into a multi-faceted and multi-faculty educational
institution for the promotion of higher education and research in Humanities, Arts, Sciences, Engineering Languages,
Technology and many more. Spread over 600 acres of land, its 1500+ teachers are imparting instruction and guidance to nearly
14,000+ students in a multi-faceted, multi-pronged and multi-faculty environment comprising 70+ Teaching and Research
Departments/Chairs on its Campus, 29 (Neighbourhood Campuses (11)/ Regional Centre (04) / Constituent Colleges (14) and
272 Colleges affiliated to it.

Engineering Programme
BEGINNING: The engineering programme at Punjabi University was started in the year 2003 in the form of University
College of Engineering (UCoE), offering bachelor’s degree in three streams of engineering, viz. Computer Science &
Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, with an intake of 60 seats in
each of these streams. In the wake of an overwhelming response following the successful placement and subsequent
career progression of the alumni from initial batches, the intake of all the three streams was enhanced in a phased
manner, along with the launch of M. Tech. programmes in the year 2009 with an intake of 30 seats in each of these
streams. The bachelor’s programme in Civil Engineering was started in the year 2011.
PROGRESSION: In order to ensure better administrative control of this growing faculty, in the year 2013, the former
UCoE was split into the present conglomerate of engineering departments, viz. Department of Computer Engineering,
Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department
of Civil Engineering. In line with the industry’s evolving requirements, in the year 2018, the Department of Electronics
and Communication Engineering introduced B. Tech. in Electronics and Computer Engineering (ECM) with intake of 60
seats, while the Department of Civil Engineering started M. Tech in Transportation Engineering with an intake of 25
seats. In response to the educational requirements, the M.Tech. Programme in Structural Engineering was also
started in the Part-Time mode in the year 2019.
VISION: The infrastructure dedicated to the engineering departments includes over 35 laboratories, along with a
mechanical workshop – together covering a broad spectrum of equipment and software from the conventional to the
most modern pieces of hardware. The curriculum is updated on a regular basis to keep it tuned to the dynamically
evolving requirements of the industry. An emphasis is laid on the introduction of inter-disciplinary courses, so as to
promote inter-disciplinary research. With an aim to serve the specialized requirements of the industry, the
departments are also working to establish a dedicated R&D Centre with active participation from the industry. The
immediate future plans include expansion in certain directions concerning leading research areas.
ACHIEVEMENTS: An active interaction with the industry is maintained through various modes, viz. industrial and field
visits of students, organization of expert talks and interactive sessions with the help of specialized experts from the
industry; inclusion of industrial training and project work as part of curriculum. A central placement cell has been
established by the University for arranging the training and placement of students. The Cell remains in constant touch
with the industrial houses and is entrusted with the responsibility of arranging on and off-campus interviews of the
students in various industries. University also projects its students by highlighting their achievements and technical
skills as per the requirements of the industry. Many well-known organizations, viz. Infosys, TCS, Tech Mahindra,
Osram Lighting (R&D), Birlasoft, Emerson ITS, Quark, Satyam, HCL, Comnet, Siemens, Wipro, Cannon, Idea Cellular,
Polaris Software, Infogain, Accenture, Newgen, Asahi Glass, John Deere, SML Isuzu etc. have visited the University
Campus and made job offers to our students over the past few years.
ADVANTAGE: The hostel facility is available for boys as well as girls, but with a limited occupancy. The Engineering
departments also encourage students to participate in extra-curricular activities, such as NCC, NSS, Youth Welfare,
Cultural Programmes, Debates, Technical Festivals, Sports etc. Unlike a typical engineering institution, participation in
such activities at the University provides a platform for interaction with the students from a diverse backgrounds,
which plays a vital role in honing an individual’s personality.
