WORKSHEET #2

SUBJECT - PHYSICS CHAPTER - GRAVITATION

ASSET questions

1. Every object exerts gravitational force on every other object - the force
exerted by an object is higher if its mass is higher. Consider 2 magnets - a
bigger magnet P and a smaller one Q. Which of the following will be true?
a) Magnet P will exert a greater magnetic force than Q.
b) The magnetic forces exerted by P and Q will be the same.
c) Magnet Q will exert a greater magnetic force than P.
d) We cannot tell from the sizes as gravity and magnetism are
unrelated.
2. A block is at rest on an inclined surface. What is the force that prevents the
body from slipping down the slope?
a) The frictional force
b) The gravitational force
c) The weight of the body
d) The reaction force
Multiple choice questions

1. The value of g on the surface of the moon :

a) is the same as on the earth
b) is less than that on the earth
c) is more than that on the earth
d) keeps changing day by day
2. The law of gravitation gives the gravitational force between :
a) the earth and a point mass only
b) the earth and the sun only
c) any two bodies having some mass
d) any two charged bodies only
3. In the relation F = G × M × m/d2, the quantity G :
a) depends on the value of g at the place of observation
b) is used only when the earth is one of the two masses
c) is the greatest on the surface of the earth
d) is of the same value irrespective of the place of observation
4. The gravitational force of attraction between two objects is x. Keeping the
masses of the objects unchanged, if the distance between the objects is
halved, then the magnitude of gravitational force between them will
become :
a) x/4
b) x/2
c) 2x
d) 4x
Assertion – Reasoning questions
A statement of assertion followed by a statement of reason is given. Choose the
correct answer out of the following choices.
a) Both assertion and reason are true, and reason is correct explanation
of the assertion.
b) Both assertion and reason are true, but reason is not the correct
explanation of the assertion.
c) Assertion is true, but reason is false.
d) Assertion is false, but reason is true.
5. Assertion : When distance between two bodies is doubled and also mass of
each body is doubled, then the gravitational force between them remains
the same.
Reason : According to Newton’s law of gravitation, force is directly
proportional to the product mass of bodies and inversely proportional to
square of the distance between them.
6. Assertion : Any two objects in the universe attract each other by a force
called gravitational force.
Reason : The force of gravitation exerted by the earth is called gravity.
7. Assertion : Universal gravitational constant G is a scalar quantity.
Reason : The value of G is same through out the universe.
8. Assertion : If we drop a stone and a sheet of paper from a balcony of first
floor, then stone will reach the ground first.
Reason : The resistance due to air depends on velocity only.
9. Assertion : A sheet of paper falls slower, than one that is crumpled in to a
ball?
Reason : Sheet of paper has lesser weight than that is crumpled into a ball.

CASE based / data based questions:

Direction : Read the passage given below and answer the following questions:

I. Earth attracts every object towards its centre. Therefore, every object,
when free, falls towards the earth due to gravitational force of earth on
it. This is the phenomenon of free fall. The acceleration produced in a
body in free fall due to gravitational force of earth on the body is called
acceleration due to gravity (g). On the surface of earth, g = 9.8 m/s2.
This value does not depend on mass of the body or nature of the body.
i. Convert the value of g in km/h2
ii. Is the value of g on moon the same as on earth?
iii. How does gravity differ from gravitation?
II. Following table gives the values of weight of a body of mass 25 kg on
different surfaces. Observe the values and answer the questions that
follow.
Name of place Value of weight
Earth’s equator 245 N
Centre of earth 0N
Surface of Sun 6850 N
Jupiter 612.5 N
Moon 40.8 N

10. What is the ratio of ‘g’ on earth and on Jupiter?

11. How is the value of ‘G’ on sun different from the value of ‘G’on moon?
Why?
12. Why is the weight zero at the center of earth? What is this state called?
13. If radius of Jupiter is about 10 times of radius of Earth, find the mass of
Jupiter in terms of mass of Earth.
