Summarizing is a way of understanding a text by identifying the main idea and its
important supporting information.
Explanation
Explanation is a text type that tells how or why things or events work or happen.
Original Selection
The Feline Mother
Adapted from Evelyn Angeles et al.
The cat is a good parent. A mother cat licks her kittens as soon as they are born.
This is how she cleans and dries her kittens. It is also a way of keeping her kittens’ fur
smooth. The mother cat nurses them, and she watches over them all day. If she thinks her
kittens are not safe, she transfers them to another place. She picks them up gently by the
skin on the back of their necks. Then, she carries them one by one to a safer place. She is
very gentle, but she will scratch any animal or person trying to harm her kittens. This is how
caring a mother cat is to her kittens.
Summary
1A cat, a good parent, takes care of her kittens. 2 The mother cat makes sure that
the kittens are clean. 3It ensures her kittens’ safety. 4This is how a mother cat takes care
of her kittens.

Activity 4: Make a 5-sentence summary of the text about a bat. Write your answers on
your answer sheet. (2 points for every sentence)
The bat is a nocturnal animal because it stays awake at night and sleeps all
day. It is like the owl, another nocturnal animal. The bat hangs upside down on a
branch of a tree or on the roof of a cave when it sleeps. When night comes, the bat
wakes up. It stretches its wings and licks itself like a cat. After washing up, the bat
flies out into the night to look for food. It zigzags among the trees and across the
fields. It can fly at night even with its eyes closed.
The bat does not bump against anything as it flies in the night. Do you
know why? The bat makes a very high-pitched squeak as it flies. Only the bat can
hear it. This sound strikes things and bounces back to the bat like a ball. If the
sound comes back quickly, the bat is very close to something. So it moves away. If
the sound takes some time to come back, the bat knows that it will not hit anything
nearby. So it goes on its way. The bat uses the sound of its voice to guide it as it
flies.
The bat is not a bird, although it flies like a bird. The bat is a mammal like
cats and dogs. It does not lay eggs. Little bats are born alive. They feed on their
mother’s milk like kittens and puppies.
