CURRENT AFFAIRS JANUARY 2023
Important Points:
• The FAO’s food price index, which tracks international prices of the most
globally traded food commodities, averaged 143.7 points in 2022, marking
a 14.3% increase from 2021 and the highest level since records began in
1990.
• The index had already gained 28% in 2021 from the previous year as the
world economy recovered from the impact of the pandemic.
• In December, the benchmark index fell to 132.4 points, compared with
135.00 points in November. This decline was attributed to a drop in the
international price of vegetable oils, as well as some declines in cereal
and meat prices, but was offset by slight increases in sugar and dairy
prices.
• Despite this month-on-month decrease, four of the FAO’s five food sub-
indexes – cereals, meat, dairy, and vegetable oils – reached record highs
in 2022, while the sugar sub-index hit a 10-year high.
• The FAO predicted last year that the rising costs of food imports would
lead poorer countries to reduce the volume of shipped goods.
• The Cereal Price Index, in particular, rose 17.9% in 2022 due to factors
including market disruptions, higher energy and input costs, adverse
weather conditions, and continued strong global food demand.
• Overall, despite experiencing a consecutive monthly fall in December, the
FAO’s food price index reached a record high in 2022, driven by the
conflict in Ukraine and a range of other factors including market
disruptions, higher energy and input costs, adverse weather conditions,
and strong global food demand.

Important Points:
• India and Pakistan signed the IWT in September, 1960 after nine years of
negotiations, with the World Bank being a signatory to the pact.
• The treaty sets out a mechanism for cooperation and information
exchange between the two sides on the use of the water of the Indus
River and its five tributaries Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, Jhelum, and Chenab.
12minutestoclat.com
CURRENT AFFAIRS JANUARY 2023
• The treaty prescribed how water from the six rivers of the Indus River
System would be shared between India and Pakistan.
• It allocated the three western rivers—Indus, Chenab and Jhelum—to
Pakistan for unrestricted use, barring certain non-consumptive,
agricultural and domestic uses by India and the three Eastern rivers —
Ravi, Beas and Sutlej—were allocated to India for unrestricted usage.
• This means that 80% of the share of water went to Pakistan, while leaving
the rest 20% of water for use by India.
• It also required both the countries to establish a Permanent Indus
Commission constituted by permanent commissioners on both sides.
• According to the provisions of the IWT, the Permanent Indus Commission
is required to meet at least once a year.

programme.
• The spacecraft will launch on an Ariane 5 in April 2023 on an eight-year
journey including gravity assist flybys of Earth and Venus before arriving
in the Jupiter system in 2031.
• It will spend at least three years making detailed observations of the giant
gaseous planet Jupiter and three of its largest moons, Ganymede, Callisto
and Europa.
• It will understand if the oceans of these icy moons could have ever been
suitable habitats for life.
• The main objective of the mission is to study the microbial life on the icy
moons of the planet
• It will also study the polar regions and the magnetosphere of the planet
• JUICE will enter the orbit of Ganymede to study its composition
• If launched in April 2023, the satellite is expected to enter Jupiter orbit
by 2034
• It will be deorbited in 2035
• Cost of the mission: 1.5 billion Euros

CURRENT AFFAIRS JANUARY 2023
Important Points:
• The post is based on the article “Hindenburg report alleged fraud by its firms,
Adani Group says ‘attack on India’”
• Hindenburg Research is a company that specializes in forensic financial
research.
• It especially looks for accounting irregularities; undisclosed related-party
transactions; illegal/ unethical business or financial reporting practices; and
undisclosed regulatory, product, or financial issues in companies.
• Hindenburg Research said its two-year investigation has shown that the Adani
group was involved in massive and “brazen stock manipulation” and an
“accounting fraud scheme”.
• Hindenburg, which has short-selling positions in Adani companies through US-
traded bonds and non-Indian-traded derivative instruments, said key listed
companies in the Adani group had “substantial debt” which has put the entire
group on a “precarious financial footing”.
• “Buy low, sell high” is the traditional investment strategy in which one buys a
stock or security at a particular price and then sells it when the price is
higher, thereby booking a profit. This is referred to as a “long position”, and is
based on the view that the price of the stock or security will appreciate with
time.
• Short selling on the other hand is a trading strategy based on the expectation
that the price of the security will fall. While fundamentally it is based on the
“buy low, sell high” approach, the sequence of transactions is reversed in
short selling — to sell high first and buy low later. Also, in short selling, the
trader usually does not own the securities he sells, but merely borrows them.

CURRENT AFFAIRS JANUARY 2023
Important Points:
• NTPC Limited and Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL) have commissioned India’s first
green hydrogen blending project in the piped natural gas (PNG) network of
NTPC Kawas Township, Surat.
• The project, which aims to supply H2-NG (natural gas) to households in the
Kawas Township, was made possible through the electrolysis of water using
power from a 1 MW floating solar project.
• The first molecule of green hydrogen from the project was set in motion by P.
Ram Prasad, head of the project Kawas, in the presence of other senior
executives of NTPC Kawas and GGL.
• Green hydrogen is produced through the electrolysis of water, using electricity
generated from renewable sources such as solar or wind power. This process
splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, with the hydrogen being
captured and stored for use as a fuel. The oxygen is released into the
atmosphere.
• The main advantage of green hydrogen is that it is a clean, renewable fuel that
can be used to power a variety of applications, including transportation and
electricity generation.
• It also has the potential to play a significant role in the de-carbonization of the
energy sector, as it can be used to replace fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse
gas emissions.
• The green hydrogen blending project in Surat is being carried out with the
approval of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB).
12minutestoclat.com
CURRENT AFFAIRS JANUARY 2023
• The regulatory body has given permission for a 5% vol./vol. blending of green
hydrogen with PNG to start with, with the blending level to be gradually
increased to reach 20%.
• The addition of green hydrogen to the natural gas network has a number of
benefits. First and foremost, it reduces CO2 emissions while maintaining the
same net heating content.
• This is an important step in the fight against climate change and will help India
reduce its hydrocarbon import bill while also bringing in foreign exchange
through the export of green hydrogen and green chemicals to the rest of the
world.
