LITERATURE REVIEW
A pop-up irrigation system is a type of irrigation system commonly used in landscaping
and agriculture to provide water to plants and crops. It consists of a network of
underground pipes or hoses that are equipped with sprinkler heads or emitters that
"pop up" when the system is activated. Here are some key features and components
of a pop-up irrigation system:
➢ Sprinkler Heads, Underground pipe, Control System, Valves and many more
Pop-up irrigation systems offer several benefits, including efficient water distribution,
reduced water wastage, customizable zoning, and automation capabilities. They are
commonly used in residential and commercial landscapes, sports fields, golf courses,
and agricultural fields to provide controlled and efficient irrigation to plants and crops.
AIMS
• Enhance Landscape Health
• Improve Water Efficiency
• Ensure Uniform Water Distribution
• Reduce Maintenance Efforts
By focusing on these aims, the installation of a pop-up irrigation system aims to
ensure a healthy, efficient, and visually appealing landscape while supporting water
conservation and sustainability objectives.
OBJECTIVES
Adequate water supply: The primary objective is to ensure that the irrigation
system provides an adequate and consistent water supply to meet the needs of the
landscape. This involves determining the water requirements of the plants, grass,
and trees in the graduation square and designing the system to deliver the
necessary amount of water.
Efficient water distribution: An important objective is to achieve efficient water
distribution throughout the landscape. This means designing the system with
appropriate sprinkler heads and nozzles that deliver water evenly and precisely to
the intended areas. The goal is to avoid overwatering or underwatering certain parts
of the square, leading to uniform growth and healthy vegetation.
Water conservation: A key objective is to promote water conservation by
minimizing water waste. This involves selecting and installing water-efficient
sprinkler heads, pressure regulators, and other devices that reduce overspray,
runoff, and evaporation. The system should be designed to deliver water directly to
the root zone of plants, optimizing water usage and reducing unnecessary water
loss.
Customization and zoning: It are essential to consider the specific needs and
characteristics of the graduation square when setting up the irrigation system. This
involves dividing the landscape into zones based on factors such as soil type, sun
exposure, and water requirements of different plant species. Each zone can be
programmed separately, allowing for customized watering schedules and ensuring
that each area receives the appropriate amount of water.
Ease of operation and maintenance: Another objective is to make the pop-up
irrigation system easy to operate and maintain. This includes selecting user-friendly
control systems and timers, as well as ensuring easy access to system components
for maintenance and repairs. Simplifying the operation and maintenance processes
reduces the time and effort required for system management.
System durability and reliability: The objective is to install a durable and reliable
pop-up irrigation system that can withstand environmental factors and operate
effectively over an extended period. Choosing high-quality components, including
sprinkler heads, valves, and piping, helps ensure the longevity and reliability of the
system, minimizing the risk of failures and costly repairs.
By focusing on these objectives, the installation of a pop-up irrigation system will be
effectively meet the watering needs of the graduation square while promoting
efficient water usage, sustainability, and ease of operation and maintenance.
METHODOLOGY
To achieve the aforementioned objectives, our proposed methodology for the
installation of the pop-up irrigation system at the graduation square, includes the
following steps:
Site Assessment: Us a group we will conduct a thorough assessment of the
landscape, taking into account factors such as soil type, plant species, sun exposure,
and water requirements. This assessment will serve as the foundation for designing
an irrigation system that meets the specific needs of the area.
Design and Equipment Selection: Based on the site assessment, we will develop
a customized design plan for the pop-up irrigation system. This will include selecting
appropriate sprinkler heads, nozzles, valves, control systems, and other components
to ensure efficient water distribution, ease of operation, and long-term durability.
Installation and System Integration: As a group we will install the pop-up
irrigation system with meticulous attention to detail, ensuring seamless integration
with the existing landscape.
Testing and Calibration: Once the installation is complete, we will thoroughly test
and calibrate the system to ensure proper functionality and optimal water distribution.
We will make any necessary adjustments to ensure the system is operating at its
highest efficiency. This will be done for at least two (2) weeks to ensure that the
change is seen on the area.
Timeline and Budget:
The proposed timeline for the installation of the pop-up irrigation system at the
graduation square is August 2023. The estimated budget for the entire project,
including materials, equipment, labor, and ongoing maintenance, is K15,000 (half the
area).
By implementing our pop-up irrigation system at the graduation square, we are
confident that we can achieve a sustainable and visually appealing landscape while
optimizing
