INTERCONNECT SYSTEM
An electrical wiring interconnect system (EWIS)

is the wiring system and components (such as
bundle clamps, wire splices, etc.) for a complex
system. The term originated in the aviation
industry but was originally designated as
Electrical Interconnection Systems (EIS).

What is EWIS in aviation?

- An EWIS is [per new § 25.1701(a)]: Any wire,
wiring device, or combination of these, including
termination devices, installed in any area of the
airplane for the purpose of transmitting
electrical energy between two or more intended
termination points .

What is EWIS training?
-EWIS is a mandatory training requirement for all

personnel operating in close proximity to aircraft
electrical wiring systems. EWIS courses are
separated out into 8 tiers, referred to as Target
Groups, that are designed to cater for personnel
with different levels of exposure to electrical wiring
installations.

• A widely known example of an accident in which
the probable initiating factor was arcing due to
damaged insulation on electrical wiring occurred
in 1996, when a 23-year-old Boeing 747-100 on
an international revenue passenger flight
exploded in mid-air shortly after take off from

• The four-year NTSB investigation concluded with the

approval of the Aircraft Accident Report on August 23,
2000, ending the most extensive, complex and costly
air disaster investigation in U.S. history at that
time. The report's conclusion was that the probable
cause of the accident was explosion of flammable fuel
vapors in the center fuel tank. Although it could not be
determined with certainty, the likely ignition source
was a short circuit.

Problems with the aircraft's wiring were found,

including evidence of arcing in the Fuel Quantity
Indication System (FQIS) wiring that enters the
tank. The FQIS on Flight 800 is known to have been
malfunctioning; the captain remarked on "crazy"
readings from the system approximately two
minutes and thirty seconds before the aircraft
exploded. As a result of the investigation, new
requirements were developed for aircraft
to prevent future fuel tank explosions.

• All 230 people on board died in the crash; it

is the third-deadliest aviation accident in U.S.
history.
• The four-year investigation into what caused
the crash of Trans World Airlines Flight 800
was the longest, and at $40 million, the
priciest in the history of the National
Transportation Safety Board.

In 2019, a single 747-8 Intercontinental

cost $418.4 million. Meanwhile, the freighter
variant was for sale for $419.2 million per unit.
Comparing the cost of the initial 747-100, the
price of the 747-8 is lower after taking inflation
into account.
