FIRST DRAFT FOR ESSAY 1

In student community engagement, effective communication plays an important role in

conveying ideas, information, and messages to a diverse audience. One common method used for

this purpose is using posters as visual aids, accompanied by scheduling strategies. This essay

delves into an analysis of a college community poster that informs readers about a 1-week

program to learn how to excel, professionally and academically. The poster was published by

TAMIU AIRES (Academic and Industry Readiness in Engineering and Science), a grant that

provides academic support services and career readiness training to upper-level undergraduate

students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). This organization is

promoting their advanced study program with the use of a schedule showing names of courses

and the times of each one of them, arranged throughout the business days of three different

weeks, each representing individual programs. This essay demonstrates the importance of

displaying a schedule and including features of a poster or flyer while presenting such a public

written announcement to the student community, highlighting how these two elements synergize

to optimize communication outcomes. The poster’s design, its content, and the purpose of using

aspects of a schedule and flyer or poster genres are all included in the analysis.

A well-structured schedule is the backbone of any successful poster presentation. Its

primary purpose is to give the audience a clear framework for their audience, enabling them to

understand the flow of information and use their time wisely. This is one of the main reasons

why TAMIU AIRES chose to use a schedule for their poster. The timetable published clarifies

how the event will be run by giving session start and end times, as well as any breaks and special

events. This clarity improves the entire experience and helps the attendees to go through the

event with ease, also, students are frequently busy and may have not known if they would be

able to make it to each lecture, that is why by using a schedule they can organize their visit

accordingly and determine the time and location of each presentation.

In addition to the schedule, the poster also provided other information, such as small

paragraphs outlining what we would study in the course. This kind of informative literature is

designed to provide readers with a more thorough understanding of the courses and assist them

in deciding whether to enroll in the study program or not. The mix of these two genres creates a

poster that is highly comprehensive, providing all the details one needs to grasp the topic, author,

and time of the program being promoted. Even though TAMIU AIRES chose the genres right for

the purpose of the occasion, they made the mistake of omitting to include a very key detail that

in a circumstance like this, one cannot miss. The location of the courses was overlooked. It

would be reasonable to presume that the classes would be held at TAMIU, but where

specifically? Definitively this is something that the authors should correct.

At this point, we have determined some reasons why the author would choose aspects of

schedule and a poster to present a promotion of a college nature, aswell as an analysis to the

structure of the post. Now let's move on into how the author used these two genres and their

perks to communicate the message the community of AIRES wanted the students of TAMIU to

understand. We know that when we want to organize dates and topics, we use a schedule. Also,

we must not forget that the style and design matter a lot also; the paper must remain attractive to

the eye, the fonts should be easily comprehended, include the author’s information and social

media of necessary, and in the most cases have the least amount of written text. With this said,

we can notice that our post passes the requirements to be considered a successful post adding to

the fact that these papers were posted in almost every building in TAMIU. Nevertheless, there is

a section of the poster that nearly abuses the amount of text that a student would usually take the

time to read, as only 47.1% of the students that notice the posters read them. Only 88.3% of the

total college student population sees the posters, according to Western Washington University’s

study about effectiveness of posters on campus, in 2019. The most amount of text used is the

paper could be easily reduced with the help of graphics, but the text was used to give the post a

more serious and formal format as the topics being described are deserving of their own

paragraphs. We can consider this poster as semi-effective, because even though the structure is

understandable and seems attractive, other aspects could be improved, or they completely forgot

to add them.

Effective communication is essential in the context of student communities and academic

events. We recognized why TAMIU AIRES chose to use a schedule for their poster, as its

primary purpose is to give the audience a clear framework for their audience, enabling them to

understand the flow of information and use their time wisely. In order to maximize this

communication and make sure that the target audience understands and appreciates the message,

a schedule and poster are used. The mix of these two genres creates a poster that is highly

comprehensive, providing all the details one needs to grasp the topic, author, and time of the

program being promoted. Nevertheless, the location of the courses was overlooked and there is a

section of the poster that nearly abuses the amount of text that a student would usually take the

time to read therefore we can understand that the poster has some aspects in which the authors

could improve. In my opinion, presenters should seek to create an engaging and educational

experience that connects with a student community, promoting learning and engagement, by

carefully selecting the schedule and poster qualities.
