Diary entries
Diaries can capture important moments in History, along with the thoughts and
feelings of the writer.

Example: The Great Fire of London

The Great Fire of London happened in 1666 (that is a long time before
photographs and television!).

The fire lasted 5 days, and destroyed lots of London city at the time.

So how do we know about it?

Samuel Pepys wrote a diary and documented what London was like in the 17th
century, along with the great Fire of London. Samuel’s diary because an
important source of information for historians.

There are two diary entries on the VLE
1. Astronaut Peggy Whitson about her mission on the International Space Station
2. Scott - A naval Antarctic explorer in 1910-1913

As you read, complete the worksheet reflecting on the diary extract.


Think about:
- What did the person experience?
- How did they convey it?
- Why is it important for us to read now?
Now we have seen some diary extracts
What notable events have happened in your lifetime that you remember?

Can you remember how you felt?

Did they have an impact on your life?

Do you think people will talk about that event in 20 years?


A notable event that we have all experienced has been the COVID-19 pandemic.

Quarantine, not seeing family, schools closing, illness… These are some of the difficult experiences
you/someone you know may have experienced in the last two years.

Using what you know about diary writing, you are going to write a 250 word diary entry about your
experience with the COVID-19 situation.

Remember to use:
- First person
- Past tense Once you are done, upload
- Detailed descriptions your work to Showbie
- Thoughts, feelings and opinions
