INTRODUCTION TO THE COMPANY Maruti Udyog Limited (MUL) was established as a Government Company inFeb. 1981 with the following objectives: Modernization of Indian Automobile Industry. Production of fuel-efficient vehicles to conserve scarce resources. Production of large number of motor vehicles, which was necessary for economic growth. A license and a joint venture agreement was s i g n e d w i t h S u z u k i Motor Company of Japan, in Oct. 1982, by which Suzuki acquired 26% share of the equity, with an option to increase it to 40%. Suzuki exercisedthis option in 1987 by increasing its equity to 40% .SMC further increasedequity to 50% in the year 1992, converting MUL, into a non governmentcompany. SMC further increased its stake to 55% in 2008-09. Currently thefactory lies in area of about 120,000 sq m.
