DIRECTIONS INSIDE THE CRYSTAL

[1,1,2]
[0,1,1]
• Direction vectors
start at origin.
[1,0,1] • Direction vector is
described by
giving the
coordinates of
[2,2,1] the first whole
numbered point
[x,y,z] through
(0,0,0)
[0,1,0] which it passes.

MILLER INDICES
• Determine the coordinates of the
intercepts made by the plane
along the three crystallographic
axes.
• Express the intercepts as multiples
½, 1, 1/3
1/
of the unit cell dimensions (or
3 lattice parameters).
1 2, 1, 3
• Determine the reciprocals of these
½ numbers.
• Reduce these reciprocals to the
(2 1 3) smallest set of integers.

MILLER INDICES
• If the plane is parallel to a
particular axis, intercept along
that axis is  (infinity).
• Hence its reciprocal will be zero.

MILLER INDICES
If the intercept is negative, bar is
shown on the top of intercept.

(-1, 0, 1)
MILLER INDICES
Equation of plane through:
(-1, 0, 1), (0, 0, 2/3) and (0, ½, 0)

(0,0,2/3)
x + 4y + 3z + 2 = 0
X-intercept = –2
Y-intercept = -1/2
Z – intercept = -2/3
(0, 1/2, 0)
Reciprocals -1/2, -2, -3/2
Closest integers: (1 4 3)

MILLER INDICES FEATURES

• All the parallel equidistant planes have the same Miller indices.
• Hence Miller Indices define a set of planes.
• If the Miller indices of two planes have the same ratio, then they are
parallel to each other.
• A particular zero Miller Index means plane is parallel to that axis.
• If direction vector [h, k, l] is perpendicular to (h k l) plane in a cubic lattice.
• Distance between two adjacent parallel planes in a cubic lattice is
