CHAPTER 12 ASSIGNMENT

Note: This assignment can be done virtually, with no trip to a physical store.

1. Look through the list of retail layout terms from Chapter 9 that are listed below. Using your
preferred search engine, find example images that represent at least five of them. For each

explanation of how your image relates to the item, and a link to where you found your image.

2. While looking for the images above, did you notice any trends in retail layouts across different
stores? If yes, explain what trends you saw, incorporating terms from the chapter. If no, explain
why you think each store used different layout strategies and some of the strategies you
noticed.

Some strategies focused on grabbing the customers attention, like the shopping speed bumps,
signage, and creative display. The tall shelving and speed bumps were also more targeted at
showing off the product selection specifically. The creative display and decompression zone
were more customer centric aimed at the immersing the consumer and improving their
experience.

3. Designing a retail space can sometimes mean coming up with creative ways to reinforce a
brand. Below, give two examples of retail atmospherics you would use in a small pet boutique.

In a pet boutique, one strategy that can be used is a creative or dramatic display that involves
the consumer like making an interactive area where you create and customise the product
yourself, and maybe making the most creative product could win you a discount. Another
strategy that could be used is creating an impulse purchase area. This could be done at the
cash counter where the customers eye would naturally be caught by the small products
available there and think theres no harm in making a small purchase.
