Essay Writing can be complex but with sufficient planning, it becomes simple.

Firstly, the structure of an essay should be considered:

1. Introduction (1 paragraph)
2. Body (usually 3-4 paragraphs)
3. Conclusion (1 paragraph)

What exactly do each of these components entail?

Introduction:

➔ A brief synopsis of the material you are writing about. It should be no more than 5-6
lines and it should ONLY include the nitty-gritty details. You should aim to write a
synopsis which could be easily used for any prompts of that specific material. (poem,
novel, short story)
➔ After the brief synopsis, comes the THESIS STATEMENT. This is ONE sentence
and it is basically rephrasing the question.

Here is an example:

PROMPT:
Breath, Eyes, Memory is a novel about wounded but resilient women who are as ‘brave as
the stars at dawn’.
Write an essay in which you describe the experiences of TWO wounded but resilient women
in the novel. You must discuss ONE similarity or ONE difference in their experiences, and
examine ONE technique used to portray the experiences of women.

THESIS STATEMENT:
In this essay, the two wounded but resilient woman examined would be Sophie Caco and
Martine Caco. A similarity in their experiences would be discussed and a technique utilized
to portray this would be identified.

(for your reference: Martine and Sophie are the 2 resilient women mentioned in the prompt)
Body:

In the body, each point in the thesis statement is EMPHASIZED in 1-2 paragraphs per point.

For instance, in this essay prompt used:

Point 1: an examination of two wounded but resilient women (Sophie and Martine Caco)
would be done. THIS WOULD BE ONE OR TWO PARAGRAPHS.

Point 2: the similarity in their experiences would be discussed. THIS WOULD BE ONE OR
TWO PARAGRAPHS.

Point 3: an identification of a technique used to portray this similarity of the experiences

between these two women would be done. THIS WOULD BE ONE OR TWO
PARAGRAPHS.

Conclusion:
This is just a wrap up. Basically just rephrase the introduction in a way that sounds like you
are answering the prompt.
Now that we have the structure of the essay, we can move on to actually writing the
essay.

Here is a brief synopsis of each prescribed text in your syllabus:
