Reliability

• anyone can set up a website


• some commercial websites will be biased
• if a website has excessive advertising it could be unreliable
• if advertising on a website is related only to its own product it could be unreliable
• it is possible to use the final part of the URL to identify a website’s reliability
• if comparison of information from reliable sites like is made, this often help to show if the information
is reliable
• it is always a good idea to see if responsibile bodies have endorsed the website
• check if the website has links to other reliable websites or to unreliable websites
• if a website has testimonials, this can indicate reliability
• if the data of the last update was a long time ago it is likely to be unreliable

Why are internet searches not always fast?

• danger of information overload


• possible for millions of sites to be found matching
• it can take a long time to find out what are you looking for
• take a long time to obtain only relevant information
• search engines may not contain what user are looking for
• rank the time to load up pages from websites

Blogs are personal internet journals where the writer will type in their observations on some topic

Features of blogs
• updated on regular basis by the author
• usually organized in reverse chronological order(most recent to least recent order)
• normally public - anyone can read them
• normally comes from a single author
• other internet users can’t change blogs

Microblogs are similar to blogs but are most often used on social networking sites to make short posts

Business blogs are used by business to promote themselves on the internet

Wikis are websites or web applications that allow users to create and edit web pages using a web
browser

Features of wikis
• anyone can edit,delete and modify the content
• many authors can be involved in a wiki
• it is possible to organize a page
• keep tracks of all entries
• can be easily edited using a web browser
• allow a large documents to be seen by many peopl
http is a set of rules that must be obeyed when transferring data across the internet

https is an extension of http, it is used to secure communication over a computer network

Advantages
• information on the internet tends to be up to date since it is quicker
• the internet has limitless amount of information
• information on the internet is usually free of charge
• pages on the internet can have multimedia elements

Disadvantages
• internet is not regulated
• there is always a risk of accessing inappropriate websites
• it is too easy to be distracted when searching on the intenet
• there is always the risk of information overload
• because it is very easy to copy material from the internet, there is a huge risk of plagiarism
• some research skills are lost when using the internet as the search engine do all the work for you
