Practical No-1
AIM: - Create a document whileexploring various versions of MS-Word and explain their key features?
List down various shortcut keys used in MS-Word?
SOLUTION:
Microsoft Word is aword processor is a computer program for processing words. A Word
processor software provides a general set of tools for entering, editing, and formatting text. A word
processor has everything that a conventional typewriter has. It provides various useful features that
cannot be done on a typewriter.
It's now up to version 14. Not that there have been 14 versions. There were early numbering
inconsistencies (versions 1, 2 and then 6 in the 1980s and 1990s). More recently, it seems that
Microsoft is a superstitious place: it skipped from 12 (Word 2007) to 14 (Word 2010).
• Word 97 represented a big change. Word 2000 consolidated on that change and Word
2000 was reliable, solid and widely used.
• Word 2002 represented a big change. Word 2003 fixed many of those problems and
again became a much-used, reliable version.
• Word 2007 gave us the biggest change in the user interface since the invention of the
toolbar and the mouse. It's a big jump from Word 2003.
• Word 2010 builds on Word 2007, fixes a lot of bugs, and introduces a few new features.
Word 2010 makes lots of tiny refinements to the user interface. For my money, it's a
generally more pleasant experience than Word 2007.
Word 2010
Word 2010: The milder, slightly better-behaved younger sister of Word 2007. Still can't find
anything. Just have to put up with it. But it is better than 2007. Really.
Word 2007
Word 2007: The new kid on the block. Makes me feel disorganized. Can't find anything.
Glamour does not outweigh substance. Word 2007 and I were never going to be friends.

Word 2003
Word 2003: Many people think this will turn out to have been the last really good version of
Word. There was a massive two-year public beta test (known as Word 2002), and Word 2003
was really solid. It's still the version I turn to when I have a choice.
Word 2002
Word 2002: The Fisher-Price version. Big UI changes compared with Word 2000. And buggy.
Very buggy.
Word 2000
Word 2000: Solid, dependable, reliable. Like an old pair of runners. Much loved, but past its use-
by date.
1. Text formatting
One of the most basic and essential features of MS Word is the ability to format text, whether
you want to change the font or size, add bold or italic formatting, change colors or alignment, or
make other stylistic changes. You can access text formatting tools by clicking on the “Home” tab
in the toolbar at the top of your screen. From here, you have a variety of different formatting
options to choose from.
Writing documents, whether for work or school, often requires a high level of accuracy and
attention to detail. This is where the MS Word spell checker can come in handy, as it
will automatically scan your document for any spelling or grammar errors that you may have
missed. You can find the spell checker by clicking on the “Review” tab in the toolbar.
3. Styles
In addition to basic text-formatting tools, MS Word also offers a range of customizable styles that
you can apply to your text. These styles are organized into categories, such as “Headings” or
“Quotes,” and offer different formatting options for different types of content.

4. Templates
A template is essentially a pre-made document that you can customize to suit your needs. This
can save you time and effort, as you won’t have to start from scratch each time you need to
create a new document. There are many different templates available in MS Word, ranging from
simple text-based templates, like letterheads or resumes, to more sophisticated layouts, like
menus or brochures. Additionally, you can create and save your own template for your own use
or for sharing.
5. Add-ons
You can add custom functionality to your MS Word documents by using add-ins, which are
essentially extra features or tools that you can download and install.
Page Setup is the feature to set up your document layout, including margins and orientation. This
feature helps change the size of the paper, set the number of pages per sheet, adjust the size and
margins of your document, etc.
Headers and footers are useful tools for adding text that will appear at the top or bottom of each
page in your document. This can be particularly helpful if you need to include information such
as page numbers, a watermark, or other small pieces of content that should stay consistent
throughout the entire document.
8. Symbols
If you need to use symbols or special characters in your document, such as mathematical
symbols, foreign language accents, etc., MS Word makes it easy to insert them into your
document with just a few clicks.
MS Word has a feature to make it easy to cite references and include citations in your document.
Some features also include the ability to automatically create a bibliography based on the sources
you’ve cited, saving you time and effort when writing academic papers.

CHARACTERISTICS:
A computer works with much higher speed and accuracy compared to humans while performing
mathematical calculations. Computers can process millions (1,000,000) of instructions per second.
The time taken by computers for their operations is microseconds and nanoseconds.
➢ Accuracy
Computers perform calculations with 100% accuracy. Errors may occur due to data inconsistency
or inaccuracy.
➢ Diligence
A computer can perform millions of tasks or calculations with the same consistency and accuracy.
It doesn’t feel any fatigue or lack of concentration. Its memory also makes it superior to that of
human beings.
➢ Versatility
Versatility refers to the capability of a computer to perform different kinds of works with same
accuracy and efficiency.
➢ Reliability
A computer is reliable as it gives consistent result for similar set of data i.e., if we give same set
of input any number of times, we will get the same result.
➢ Automation
Computer performs all the tasks automatically i.e. it performs tasks without manual intervention.

INPUT DEVICES
Keyboard
Keyboard is the most common and very popular input device which helps to input data to the
computer. The layout of the keyboard is like that of traditional typewriter, although there are
some additional keys provided for performing additional functions.
Mouse
Mouse is the most popular pointing device. It is a very famous cursor-control device having a
small palm size box with a round ball at its base, which senses the movement of the mouse and
sends corresponding signals to the CPU when the mouse buttons are pressed.
Generally, it has two buttons called the left and the right button and a wheel is present between
the buttons. A mouse can be used to control the position of the cursor on the screen, but it cannot
be used to enter text into the computer.
Joystick
Joystick is also a pointing device, which is used to move the cursor position on a monitor screen.
It is a stick having a spherical ball at its both lower and upper ends. The lower spherical ball
moves in a socket. The joystick can be moved in all four directions.
OUTPUT DEVICES
Monitor
The most general example of an output device is a monitor. It is also known as a Visual Display
Unit (VDU) and the major function of a monitor is to display the processed data like images,
videos, text, audio, etc. A monitor arranges the microscopic dots known as pixels in a rectangular
pattern to make images. The number of pixels present determines the sharpness of an image.

Printer
Printers are another common example of Output devices. Printers primarily operate by producing
a copy, typically a hard copy or Xerox copy, of the information transmitted by the computer. The
printer receives electronic data from the computers and produces a hard copy of the processed
data. Printers are divided into two categories which are Impact Printer and Non-Impact Printer.
1) Impact Printer: In impact printers firstly the characters are printed on the ribbon which is then
smashed on the paper. In other words, we can say that Impact Printers uses a print head or hammer
to print the data on paper. The hammer or print head strikes an ink ribbon against the paper and
the character starts printing the paper. Some examples of impact printers are:
• Daisy wheel printer
• Line printer
• Chain printer
2) Non-Impact Printers: Non-impact printers do not use any hammer or print head to strike the ink
ribbon. These printers print characters or images without using ribbons. Non-Impact printers are
often known as Page Printers because they print one full page at a time. Some examples of non-
impact printers are:
• Laser printer
• Inkjet printer
Speaker
They are the audio output devices. Computer speakers are hardware output devices that
connect to a computer to reproduce sound. The signals used to reproduce sound from your
computer's speakers are produced by your computer's sound card.
