EOS PROJECT
WORKSHEET
GENERAL CHEMISTRY FOR ENGINEERS

NAME/S: _KIMBERLY RAMADILLA

PROJECT TITLE: ENHANCING COLORATION AND SUSTAINABILITY OF

GELATIN-BASED BIOPLASTICS THROUGH INNOVATIVE DYEING FOOD
COLOR TECHNIQUES

Objectives: This research aims to contribute to the development of more

visually appealing and environmentally friendly gelatin-based bioplastics for
various application.

Research/Project Overview:

(Present a description of the proposed research/project based on a conceptual framework, proposed research/project design
labeled properly, and a brief methodology on how the research/project will be conducted/executed/implemented.)

In this research, the innovative dyeing techniques would be considered the

independent variable, while the gelatin-based bioplastics would be
considered the dependent variable. The study will focus on observing the
impact of different dyeing techniques on the coloration and sustainability of
gelatin-based bioplastics. Researchers will manipulate and apply innovative
dyeing techniques to bioplastics to determine their effectiveness in
improving these properties. The goal is to enhance the coloration and
sustainability of gelatin-based bioplastics through the use of innovative
dyeing techniques. The process of enhancing coloration and sustainability
of gelatin-based bioplastics through innovative dyeing techniques involves

several steps. Gelatin, derived from animal collagen, is combined with other
biodegradable materials to create bioplastics. Dyes are carefully selected
for compatibility and sustainability. Pre-treatment ensures cleanliness and
dye absorption. Innovative dyeing techniques are applied, followed by
fixation to enhance colorfastness. Post-treatment removes residualg
chemicals. Evaluation and refinement optimize the process. Future
developments aim to improve colorfastness, sustainability, and efficiency
through new methods and technologies. The goal is to achieve vibrant and
long-lasting colors while promoting environmental responsibility.

Research/Project Literature Review:

(Present at least 5 reviews of literature, i.e, article publications. Focus your review on the findings and conclusions that has
relevance to your research/project, i.e, what are similarities and what was not done in the reviewed reference that will justify
the reason why it is necessary for you to embark on this research/project.)

___NATURAL DYES/COLOURANTS HAVE BEEN USED HISTORICALLY

THROUGHOUT THE WORLD. THE USE OF NATURAL DYES/COLOURANTS
HAS DECREASED TO A LARGE EXTENT DUE TO THE ADVENT OF
SYNTHETIC DYES. { ACCORDING TO BHUYAN AND SAICA}, YES DERIVED
FROM NATURAL SOURCES HAVE EMERGED AS IMPORTANT ALTERNATIVES
TO SYNTHETIC DYES. THE RESEARCHERS ALSO STATED THE PLANT
KINGDOM OFFERS A VAST SOURCE OF NATURAL DYES/COLOURANTS
WHICH CAN BE OBTAINED FROM MANY PLANT PARTS E.G., LEAVES,
FRUITS, SEEDS, FLOWERS, BARKS AND ROOTS
. DYEING IS A UNIFORM COLORANT OF A SUBSTANCE THAT USUALLY
TO MATCH AND PRE-SELECTED COLOUR. ( ACCORDING TO CLARK, 2020),
THE APPLICATION OF COLOUR CAN BE ACHIEVD BY A NUMBER OF
METHODS, BUT THE MOST COOMON METHODS ARE EXHAUST DYEING
(BATCH), CONTINOIUS (PADING) AND PRINTING.
THE SELECTION OF PLASTICIZER, LIPOPHILIC STARCH, AND GELATIN
CONCENTRATIONS FOR VARIOUS TECHNIQUES, SUCH AS PRESSING, BLOW
MOLDING, AND EXTRUSION, WAS TESTED USING CASTING TECHNIQUE.
GLYCEROL AND SORBITOL WERE CHOSEN DUE TO THEIR STRONG
MOLECULAR INTERACTION WITH STARCH, FORMING HYDROGEN BONDS
WITH AMYLOSE MACROMOLECULES (LI & HUNEAULT, 2011).

AS GELATIN CONTAINS A MAJORITY OF DENATURED COLLAGENS,

ITS AMINOACID COMPOSITION IS CLOSE TO THAT OF COLLAGEN
MOLECULES. HOWEVER, SOME VARIATIONS REMAIN DUE TO THE
MANUFACTURING PROCESS AND THE MOLECULAR ORGANIZATION OF
GELATIN IS VERY DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF NATIVE COLLAGEN. THE
TRANSFORMATION OF COLLAGEN TO GELATIN LEADS TO CHANGES IN THE
MOLECULAR COMPOSITION OF SEVERAL AMINOACIDS. INDEED, THE
ALKALINE PROCESS DEAMINATES GLUTAMINE INTO GLUTAMIC ACID AND
ASPARAGINE INTO ASPARTIC
ACID._____________________________________________________________________________

Relevance to General Chemistry for Engineers:
(Briefly describe how your project is related to the General Chemistry for Engineers; illustrate by calculation, chemical
reaction, etc., as the case maybe. Indicate NA if the topic does not apply to your project.)

1. ELECTROCHEMISTRY _____ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUES CAN BE

USED TO CREATE NEW DYEING METHODS THAT IMPROVE
COLORATION AND SUSTAINABILITY, SUCH AS BY DEPOSITION OF
DYES ONTO GELATIN-BASED BIOPLASTICS FOR CONTROLLED AND
UNIFORM COLORATION

2. NUCLEAR CHEMISTRY : N/A

3. CHEMISTRY OF ENGINEERING MATERIALS

THIS FIELD IS HIGHLY RELEVANT TO THE TITLE AS IT FOCUSES ON
THE CHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS USED IN
ENGINEERING APPLICATIONS. UNDERSTANDING THE CHEMISTRY OF
GELATIN-BASED BIOPLASTICS AND THEIR INTERACTION WITH DYES
CAN AID IN DEVELOPING INNOVATIVE DYEING TECHNIQUES.

4. CHEMISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT

THE CHEMISTRY OF THE ENVIRONMENT ENCOMPASSES THE STUDY

SYSTEMS. IT CAN BE RELEVANT TO THE TITLE BY CONSIDERING THE

ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT OF DYEING TECHNIQUES AND EXPLORING
SUSTAINABLE ALTERNATIVES THAT MINIMIZE POLLUTION AND
WASTE

5. CHEMICAL SAFETY
CHEMICAL SAFETY IS CRUCIAL IN ANY CHEMICAL-RELATED
RESEARCH OR APPLICATION. IN THE CONTEXT OF THE TITLE, IT IS
IMPORTANT TO CONSIDER THE SAFETY ASPECTS OF THE DYES
USED, THEIR POTENTIAL TOXICITY, AND THE SAFE HANDLING AND
DISPOSAL OF CHEMICALS INVOLVED IN THE DYEING PROCESS.
