Sankhep Jeevani - Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji Bhindranwale
(Based on the short life story written by Singh Sahib Giani Kirpal Singh Ji in 'Gurmukh Darshan')

Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji 'Bhindranwale'

was born on the 26 th of March 1919 (13 Chet

Samvat 1976 Bikrami) to Sardar Hari Singh

and Mata Dharam Kaur. Their previous

residence was Pind Simbli in Nawanshehar,

but after Sardar Hari Singh Ji became a

Hawaldar in the army, their family moved to

Pind Chakk, 130 South Branch Sargodha

(now in Pakistan). Being a pensioner of the Army, Sardar Hari Singh was entitled

to land in this area. It was here that Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji was born.

At the age of 5, Sardar Hari Singh sent Sant Ji to primary school to start his

education. Both parents were of a strict religious and spiritual nature. Before

starting school, they made sure that all the ir children had memorized the Bani of

Jap Ji Sahib. 1 From this, we can see how Sant Ji received spiritual Vidhya and

Gurbani Nitnem in his family heritage and tradition. Sant Ji had only passed 4

classes when his father, Sardar Hari Singh passed away. After this Sant Ji spent

another 3 years studying at Khalsa High School (Sargodha), before moving to

Jalandhar where he studied at King George Royal Indian Military School. At that

time there were only 3 Military schools in all of India, and only the children of

military servicemen could enroll here. After education, many of these students

Sant Ji was still studying in the 9th year of

Military School when Mata Dharam Kaur

passed away. Soon after, Sant Ji's elder

brother Sundar Singh 'Sundar' who was a

very skilled Panjabi poet, also passed

away. Sant Ji sent letters to his other

brothers asking them to accept Akal

Purakh Ji's will as sweet Once when Sant Ji was studying in a General Knowledge

class, he asked the Professor the following questions: "who has made this

creation? How and why did they create it?" but the professor had no answer.

During the sutnmer holidays, when Sant Ji went back to his village, he met a

Gurmukh Naam Abhiyaasi, Bhai lsher Singh Ji, to whom he repeated the same

questions. Bhai lsher Singh Ji replied that if you want the answer to this question

then you must t urn your face away from the attachments of this world and give

up everything you have. With the company of Bhai Isher Singh Ji and other

Gurmukhs, Sant ji's mind started to join more towards Naam Simran and he

began to see the world as an illusion (in the avastha of vairaag). With his mind

engrossed in Bhajan Bandagi, just a few months before his exams, Sant Ji gave a

letter to the British Colonel in charge that he had decided to leave the School. The

professors and army officials tried hard to change Sant )i's mind; however Sant Ji

did not agree.

4
After leaving school Sant Ji went straight to Bhai

Isher Singh Ji. Bhai !sher Singh Ji sent him to Sant

Ghanaiya Singh Ji Pathlaave Wale, who was a great

Naam Abhyaasi Saint, known to be true to his word.

It was from Sant Ghanaiya Singh Ji that Sant Giani

Mohan Singh Ji received Khande Da Amrit and

became a Tyar-bar-tyar Khalsa. After this Sant Ji

Sant Chanalya Singh JI

became engrossed in the Simran of Gurmantar

and Moolmantar as was given by the Panj Piare.

During this period Sant Ji officially started

reading Gurbani Teekas and other Sampardai

literature. Sant Ji read Saarkutavli, Bhavrasarnrit,

Vichaar Mala, Adhyata,n Parkash, Parbodh

Chandra Natak and Vairag Shatak from Sant

Giani Khem Singh Ji (Allachaur). After this they 5.lnl Gl•nl Khcrn Singh 11 (Allachaur)

spent 6 months meditating in a small hut in village Kalaur, outside Anandpur

Sahib. At Anandpur Sahib they met Giani Hard it Singh Ji, who told them that if

they wanted their Naam Abhyaas to improve then you must learn the correct

recitation and meanings of Sri Guru Cranth Sahib Ji. Giani Ji told him that this gift

could only be received at that time from Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji

Bhindranwale. When Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji came to Anandpur Sahib,

Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji went specially to meet them. As soon as they met, Sant

Giani Mohan Singh Ji was elated by Mahapurakh's darshan and Bachan. A few

days later Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji decided that he wanted to join Sant Giani

5
Gurbachan Singh Ji's Jatha and arrived at Bhindran (the headquarters of the

Jatha). At that time 127 Akhand Paths were going on at Bhindran.

Like the other students of the Jatha,

Sant Ji would listen to Mahapurakh's

Katha in the morning and the

evening and would spend their free

time at the outskirts of the village

meditating. Sant Giani Gurbachan

Singh Ji instructed them to start

writing down the arth (meaning) of Gurbani in notebooks. For 5 years Sant Giani

Mohan Singh Ji stayed in the Jatha and during this time alongside learning and

writing the correct recitation and meaning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji three

times, Sant Ji also studied the Sri Dasam Granth, Bhai Gurdas )i's Bani, Bhai Nand

Lal/i's Bani, Sri Guru Nanak Parkash, Sri Gurpartap Suraj Granth, Sri Guru Panth

Parkash, Gurbilas Patshahi 6 and Gurbilas Patshahi 10.

When Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji saw that Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji's Gurmat

Vidhya was complete, in 1944, they decided to send Sant Ciani Mohan Singh Ji to

Amritsar to learn Vedanta, Nayaya and Pingal. To study these Granths, Sant Ji

went to study from Giani Anokh Singh Ji who resided in Dera Thakura Amritsar.

Giani Anokh Singh Ji taught Sant Ji difficult Granths such as Vichar Sagar, Mokh

Panth, and Briti Prabhakar. Sant Ji wrote down all the meanings and also

memorized them. Alongside these Granths, Sant Ji also studied Tarak Sangreh,

Nayaya Parkash and repeated the study of the 5th 'Ruth' of Gurpratap Su raj

6
Granth. From Pandit Amar Singh Ji, Sant Ji studied Roop Deep Pin9al and Chand

Ratnav/i. From Mahant Ganesha Singh Ji, a famous Nirmala authour, Sant Ji also

studied Ayurvedic literature. Sant Ji also learnt Urdu from Giani Ram Singh Ji

Amritsar and repeated the study of Parbodh Chandra Natak and Vaira9 Shatak.

From Sant Dalip Singh Ji, Sant Ji learnt the art of Gatka (martial arts). Mahant

Jivan Singh Ji, who was the head of the 'Dera Thakura Amritsar' wanted to make

Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji the next Mahant of the Dera, however, Sant Giani

Mohan Singh Ji did not agree, and instead recommended that Giani Sajjan Singh Ji

be made the Mahant Due to the pollution of a built-up city like Amritsar, and

due to the deep study and effort of reading Granths, Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji

became very ill. They went to Giani Nihal Singh Ji 'Vaidh' (doctor), in Pind Jalaal

for treatment. When Singh Sahib Giani Kirpal Singh Ji found out he visited Sant

Giani Mohan Singh Ji and brought him back to Gurdwara Akhand Parkash

Bhindar Kalan. With the help of Giani Karnail Singh Ji Baduwal, they started to

treat Sant Ji. For 8 n1onths they stayed in Bhindran and their health improved

greatly. During the partition of India, they were still in Bhindran. After this Sant Ji

left Bhindran to visit Sant Seva Singh Ji, the successor of Sant Ghanaiya Singh Ji at

Sri Anandpur Sahib, from whom Sant Ji had received Amrit. Sant Ghanayia Singh

Ji had insisted that Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji take up the service of renovating

the Gurdwara Sahibs around Anandpur Sahib. Sant Ji said he would first take a

Hukamnama Sahib and then decide. The Hukamnama that ca1ne was:

Those whose hearts are not filled with the Vaheguru Ji's Naam - all their affairs

are worthless and insipid. - Ang 1336

stayed in Curdwara Sahibs for 11 months. After this they stayed for 11 months

are Sri Paunta Sahib and meditated sitting in the surrounding hills. Then they

went to Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib. They first stayed at the Nihang Singh Chauni

near to Sachkhand Sahib, and then at Mata Sahib Deva Curdwara and sat on the

banks of the Codavari and spent all their time in meditation. In this manner, they

stayed at Sri Hazur Sahib for a whole year before moving back to Bhindran.

One of Sant Ciani Curbachan Singh Ji's students, Ciani Sooba Singh Ji used to live

at Bunga Mastuana (a school for Curbani Vidhya started by Sant Attar Singh Ji at

Sri Darndama Sahib) and would do daily Katha of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and

teach students the Sampardai Arth of Curbani. They suddenly passed away, due

to which the local Sangat went to Sant Ciani Curbachan Singh Ji and requested a

Ciani Singh from the Jatha to perform Katha at Bunga Mastuana. Sant Ciani

Curbachan Singh Ji sent Sant Ciani Mohan Singh Ji to do this Sewa. Sant Ji

remained there for 2 years, starting the Katha from where Giani Sooba Singh Ji

left off at Raag Sorath. After completing this Katha, he returned to Bhindran.

8
Bhagat Ujjagar Singh Ji from village Kahna was

very close to Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji. Singhs

from Kahna Village had moved to Dheera

Patra and requested Sant Ji to move there. In

1955 Sant Ji moved there and made a

temporary hut on the outskirts of the village.

They started the Katha of Sri Gurpartap Su raj

Gran th. On the completion of the Bhog they invited Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji

and a very big Jorr Mela took place. Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji also encouraged

the local Sangat to attend and do seva of the Curdwara Sahib.

In 1956, Sant Ciani Gurbachan Singh Ji became very ill, and Singh Sahib Giani

l(jrpal Singh Ji started doing the daily Katha twice a day. After some time, he also

called Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji back to Bhindran. After this Sant Giani Mohan

Singh Ji started to teach Amritvela Katha in place of Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh

Ji due to their ill health. Singh Sahib Giani Kirpal Singh Ji would do the evening

Gurpartap Suraj Granth Katha.

When Giani Kirpal Singh Ji was

away, Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji

would do both the morning and

evening Katha. When Sant Ciani

Gurbachan Singh Ji's health

improved and they started doing

Katha again, Sant Ciani Mohan

9
Singh Ji was given the duty of teaching the Vedant Granths to the students such as

Saarkutavli, Bhavrasamrit, Vichaar Mala, Adhyatam Parkash, Parbodh Chandra

Natak, Chanakya Rajneeti and Vichar Sagar. Whenever Sant Giani Gurbachan

Singh Ji was ill, Sant Mohan Singh Ji would stay in the Jatha and teach, however

they would still travel to secluded places to meditate.

On the 9th July 1969, the head Mahapurakhs of the Samparda, new and old

Vidhiarthi Singhs, and both Panchayats of Bhindran did Benti that Sant Mohan

Singh Ji do Seva of teaching the Sampardai Arth of Gurbani. But out of their

Nimrata (humility) and Tyaag (detached nature), Sant Giani Mohan Singh Ji in

humility stated that give this place to another Singh as he was just a Sevak and

wanted to remain as a Sevadaar. However, when the Panth asked Sant Ji to take

up the Seva of Gurdwara Akhand Parkash Bhindran, Sant Ji accepted the Hukam

of the Sangat and produced some of the finest Giani Singhs and Parcharaks in the

Pan th. Sant Ji merged with Akaal Purakh Vaheguru on Wednesday 2 nd December

2020.

Note: The above is a translation from the book of Singh Sahib Giani Kirpal

Singh Ji, Vidhiarthi of Sant Giani Gurbachan Singh Ji Khalsa Bhindranwale.

This account of Mahapurakh 's Jeevan only covers a brief period of their life.

There is much to be added to this Jeevani, I would do Benti that those who

have more information and would like to contribute to make this Jeevani

more detailed, to do so.
