Wedging
Deflection Wedges are used by drilling contractors to influence a number of conditions that may
exist in a diamond drill hole. The main factors that initiate the use of a wedge are;
· To control deviation so target intersection is achieved.
· To intersect targets below inaccessible locations.
· To alter the course of a drill hole so that targets can be intersected at a stipulated angle.
· To intersect multiple targets below a common collar which has been cased to isolate difficult
ground conditions.
· To allow multiple target intersections by deviating branch holes from a previously drilled parent
hole.
· To bypass areas which may prove difficult to drill.
· To side-track abandoned equipment in a hole to allow drilling to continue.
Wedge Types
Boart Longyear’s range of deviation control equipment currently includes Clappison Wedge
Assemblies and Hall Rowe Wedge Assemblies. The wedges provide an initial deflection of 1.5
degrees (or in very hard formation 1.0 degree). It is recommended that multiple wedges are not
placed closer than 10m apart. The differences and recommended applications for these follows.
Clappison
The Clappison Wedge is a retrievable wedge which means that it can be removed from the hole
after completing the intended deviation. Drilling of the branch or corrected hole is then continued
using the same hole diameter as the parent hole. A complete Clappison Wedge Assembly
includes the wedge assembly which is orientated and set into the parent hole, plus a Pilot Reamer
Assembly which is used to deviate the parent hole by drilling and reaming past the wedge.
The Clappison Wedge is reusable if it is refurbished after removal from the hole and is therefore
ideally suited for re-directing holes that have the tendency to deviate from target. It must be set
onto a secure, flat hole bottom, and is primarily suited to use on the bottom of the parent hole but it
can be used further up the hole if sufficient care and preparation is used.
Hall Rowe
The Hall Rowe Wedge is a non-retrievable wedge meaning it cannot be removed from the hole
once it has been set. They are generally intended for drilling side branch holes in off bottom
situations, or for side-tracking abandoned in-hole equipment. Drilling of the branch hole is also
continued using the same diameter as the parent hole and should be initiated using a Pilot Reamer
Assembly the same as for the Clappison Wedge.
Hall Rowe Wedges are a relatively simple and robust design meaning there is less likelihood of
in-hole problems from occurring. Since all subsequent trips in and out of the hole will require
running past the wedge, it is imperative however that the wedge is both securely set and that the
top of the wedge has been sufficiently reamed to prevent the hang up of in-hole tools. Flat faced
bits use carbon guide plugs.
