What is it?
What is Grammar?
Grammar in a language is a set of rules and examples that encompass:
• Syntax: The way in which we order words to create phrases, clauses (i.e.
a group of words that contain a subject and predicate), and sentences.
• Word structures (morphology)- e.g. additional an ‘s’ to the word ‘dogs’.
The subject (a noun or a pronoun) tells us the focus of the sentence while the
verb makes a statement about it.
Rule number 2:
If the subject is plural, the verb must be plural.
Example:
They write every day.
Rule number 3:
When the subject of the sentence is composed of two or more nouns or
pronouns connected by and, use a plural verb
Example:
The doctoral student and the committee members write every day.
Rule number 4:
When there is one subject and more than one verb, the verbs throughout the
sentence must agree with the subject.
Example:
Interviews are one way to collect data and allow researchers to gain in-depth
understanding of participants
Rule number 5:
Intervening words like together with, in addition to, along with, as well as,
including, and similar constructions following the subject do not affect the
number of the subject.
Example:
1. The student, as well as the committee members, is excited.
2. Strategies that the teacher uses to encourage classroom participation
include using small groups and clarifying expectation.
