I-shift sensors and signals

This material describes the sensors and signals used by the I-shift gearbox.
The material is divided into three sections:
- Internal sensors and signals
- External sensors and signals
- Operation example*

* Separate module.

Internal sensors
The internal sensors are the sensors that are located inside the I-shift gearbox.
The numbers in brackets are the number of senders of the same type.

- Clutch position sensor (1)

- Air cylinder position sensors (4)
- Inclination sensor (1)
- Oil temperature sensor (1)
- Air pressure sensor (1)
- Speed sensors (2)+(1)
- ECU temperature sensor (1)

Internal sensors - Clutch position sensor

The position sensor of the clutch cylinder is a PLCD sensor (Permanent magnetic Linear
Contactless Displacement).
The PLCD sensor has a permanent magnet that moves close to the metal core of the sensor.
The magnet causes variation in the saturation of the core that can be measured by the sensor
electronics.

Internal sensors - Air cylinder position sensors

The four position sensors are mounted on the four air cylinders in the control housing. The
sensors are inductive sensors where the inductive characteristics change depending on the
position of the metal pin that is following the movements of the air cylinders.
The actual measurement is done by sending a square wave pulse into the inductive coil of the
sensor and measuring the response time (how quick the voltage rises). Higher inductance
means slower response time, see diagram.

I-shift - Sensors & signals - ishift_ss_inclination.swf - 2006-06-29 - 11:25

Internal sensors - Inclination sensor

The inclination sensor is located on the circuit board.
Changing the trucks inclination will change the characteristic of the capacitive element in the
sensor.

I-shift - Sensors & signals - ishift_ss_oiltemp.swf - 2006-06-29 - 11:25

Internal sensors - Oil temperature sensor

The oil temperature sensor is integrated into the connector where the cables enter into the
gearbox from the control housing.
The sensor is a NTC type and the characteristics are shown in the diagram.

I-shift - Sensors & signals - ishift_ss_airpress.swf - 2006-06-29 - 11:25

Internal sensors - Air pressure sensor

The air pressure sensor is of a piezoresistive type. The output voltage from the sensor closely
corresponds to the air pressure as shown in the diagram.

I-shift - Sensors & signals - ishift_ss_speed.swf - 2006-06-29 - 11:25

Internal sensors - Speed sensors

Two of the speed sensors are located in the control housing and measure the speed of the main
shaft and the countershaft.

Countershaft speed sensor

The countershaft speed sensor is an inductive sensor.

Main shaft speed sensor

The main shaft speed sensor is a electronic sensor with a Hall element. Using a Hall element
instead of a inductive sensor makes it possible to measure the rotation speed and the rotation
direction.

The third speed sensor is a sensor that measures the output speed of the gearbox. This sensor
is not really a “internal” sensor since it is connected to the tachograph. Speed information is
then sent to the VECU and from there to other ECU:s that need this information, among them
the TECU.

I-shift - Sensors & signals - ishift_ss_ecutemp.swf - 2006-06-29 - 11:25

Internal sensors - ECU temperature sensor

The sensor is of the NTC type and is mounted directly on the circuit board.

I-shift - Sensors & signals - ishift_ss_external.swf - 2006-06-29 - 11:25

External sensors
The external sensors and signals are the sensors that are located outside the I-shift gearbox.
Normally they originate from other ECU:s and the signal information is sent to the GECU
(Gearbox ECU) via the data buses.

The picture gives an overview over where the external signals originate.
The ECU:s and their corresponding MID-numbers are:
MID 128 - EECU (Engine ECU), engine torque, engine speed and engine retarder status
MID 130 - TECU (Transmission ECU)
MID 136 - EBS (Electronic Brake System), vehicle speed, ABS status, engine control status
MID 140 - IC (Instrument Cluster)
MID 144 - VECU (Vehicle ECU), parking brake status, brake pedal status, accelerator position,
PTO status, cruise control status, retarder stalk status
MID 150 - ECS (Electronically Controlled Suspension), axle weight
MID 216 - LCM (Light Control Module), trailer connection status
MID 223 - GECU (Gearlever ECU), driver selections
