BACKGROUND

Hans Hollein is an Autrian architect and designer and a key figure of

postmodern architecture. He was born in Vienna, Austria in 1934. From his
earliest school days, he manifested a talent for drawing. Although he chose
architecture as his profession, his works of art are in many public and private
collections around the world. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, School
of Architecture, in Vienna in 1956. During 1959 he attended the Illinois Institute of
Technology and then in 1960, the University of California, Berkeley, where he
completed his Master of Architecture degree.[6] During these years he met Mies
van der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright and Richard Neutra.[6]

In 1985 he was recognized with the Pritzker Prize, one of architecture's most
prestigious awards. Hollein built his reputation with small-scale buildings,
including a 12-foot-wide candle shop in Vienna. He worked in what is called a
postmodern style, freely mixing elements from the past with futuristic designs
and materials, often draping his buildings with metal or glass.

FAMOUS WORKS
Retti Candle Shop in Vienna 1966.
The shop is located in the most exclusive shopping street in the center of
Vienna. The whole character and attitude had to consider its distinguished
location, its limited size and its use
Feigen Gallery 1969
In 1969, Richard Feigen commissioned the Austrian architect Hans Hollein to
redesign an 1887 row house and convert it into a two-story gallery and residence
for his own use. The gallery has changing floor levels and ceiling heights and a
balcony overlooking the ground floor.
Abterberg Museum 1982
The planning of the structure was founded in 1971, however it was completed
to be the post-modernist building that is to today in the year of 1982. The style,
materials, and construction of the urban design are integrated from Hollein's
concept of a contemporary museum, making his proposal an original piece of art.
Haas Haus 1990
It is a building in the postmodernist style and was completed in 1990. The
building is located at the site of the former Philipp Haas & Söhne flagship
department store dating to 1867, destroyed during World War II and rebuilt in
1953.
Vulcania Centre Européen du Volcanisme 2002
