- a way of cleaning one’s hands that reduces potential pathogens to
a significant extent.
- considered a primary measure for reducing the risk of transmitting
infection among patients and health care personnel.
- includes the use of alcohol-based hand rubs and hand washing
with soap and water.

How to Perform Hand Hygiene?
Hand rub with alcohol
● Dispense alcohol into palm of one hand
● Rub hands together, make sure to cover all surfaces
● Allow to air dry

Hand wash with soap and water


● Wet hands with water
● Apply soap
● Rub hands vigorously for at least 15 seconds, cover all surfaces
● Rinse with water and dry with paper towel
● Use the paper towel to turn off the faucet
How to Perform Hand Hygiene?
Surgical hand hygiene/antisepsis
• antimicrobial soap or alcohol-based surgical hand scrub
• Antimicrobial soap: scrub hands and forearms
• Alcohol-based surgical hand scrub: before applying, wash hands
and forearms with a non-antimicrobial soap
How to Put On (Don) PPE Gear
1. Identify and gather the proper PPE to don.
2. Perform hand hygiene using hand sanitizer.
3. Put on isolation gown.
4. Put on face mask, unless N95 or higher respirator is required).
5. Put on face shield or goggles.
6. Put on gloves.
7. You may now enter patient room.
How to Take Off (Doff) PPE Gear
1. Remove gloves.
2. Remove gown.
3. You may now exit patient room.
4. Perform hand hygiene.
5. Remove face shield or goggles.
6. Remove and discard respirator or face mask.
7. Perform hand hygiene after removing the respirator/face mask and
before putting it on again if your workplace is practicing reuse.
Standard Precautions
- practices that apply to all patient care, regardless of suspected or confirmed
status of the patient.
