Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

In the realm of education, understanding the study habits of students is essential

for enhancing their academic performance. Study habits encompass various aspects of a
student's learning routine, including how the students allocate their study time, the
environments they choose for studying, and the methods they employ to grasp and retain
information. To provide a solid foundation for this investigation, the researchers draw
upon prior research findings. For instance, Smith & Johnson (2022) found that the
effective allocation of study time is closely associated with improved academic
performance. Moreover, Brown & Anderson (2021) highlighted the significance of study
environments, indicating that students who select conducive settings tend to exhibit better
concentration and knowledge retention. Study habits include spending dedicated,
planned, uninterrupted time applying oneself to the task of learning. Study habits tell a
person how much they will learn, how far they want to go, and how much they want to
earn. All this can be determined by one's lifelong learning habits. According to the study
of Oliva (2021), Identifying the learners' study habits and their effect with the academic
performance can, thus, improve their academic performance, strengthen and modify their
study habits. Prioritizing studies immensely determines the level of academic
performance of the learner. The level of preparation and learning strategies improved and
applied consciously by learners, leading to affect their level of academic performance.

The Study of Barcenas (2022) has revealed that study habits greatly affect the
academic performance of students. However, these habits do not necessarily contribute to
2

the development of academic performance, indicating that study habits such as creating
and completing revision plans, reading and taking notes were the most effective ways to
influence students' academic performance. The study from the Cagraray Island,
Philippines found that students often practiced learning modes to focus on what the
teacher taught, memorize and pre-assess lessons. Furthermore, the study concluded that
high school students in Cagraray Island were not aware of study habits that would help
them improve their overall academic performance. Improvements to the study were
suggested, such as creating an appropriate lesson plan, improving reading comprehension
and strategic note taking. the habits of high school students in the region to develop
academic success in the long term.

This study aimed to explore the intricate relationship between these study habits
and their impact on academic achievement of grade 11 students of Carmen National High
School. Despite these above insights, the researchers study also aimed to address
challenges faced by students in adopting positive study habits. As the researchers delve
into the data, the researcher will anticipate that the findings will support the idea that
enhancing the study habit such as study time, optimizing study environments, and
refining study methods can lead to improved academic outcomes among Grade 11
students. This research contributes to the broader understanding of study habits and their
impact on academic success, offering valuable insights that can inform educational
practices and policy.

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the study habits of Grade 11 students at Carmen
National High School and explore its impact on academic performance. Specifically, this
research seeks to address the following questions:

1. What is the level of students’ study habit in terms of:

1.1 Study Time
1.2 Study Environment
1.3 Study Method/ technique
3

2. Is there a significant relationship between study habits and academic

performance of the grade 11 students?
3. Based on the findings, what study habit intervention program can be
formulated?

Scope and Delimitation

This study will be conducted at Carmen National High School during the
academic year 2023-2024. This delves into the study habits of grade 11 students from
diverse strands namely: HUMSS, STEM, ABM, GAS, HE, ICT, and IA.

This research is limited to the grade 11 students only who are enrolled in this
academic institution during academic period. This specifically focus on the exploration
and the connection between study habits and academic performance. It includes an in-
depth analysis of variable ensuring a concentrated investigation into the broader aspects
of students’ study approaches and their influence on academic achievements within the
specified parameters.

Significance of the Study

Students. This study will provide Grade 11 students at Carmen National High
School with valuable insights into the relationship between their study habits and
5

academic performance. It will specifically understand the importance of effective study

strategies, potentially leading to improved learning outcomes.

Faculty. This study can help the faculty members to adopt and use appropriate
instructional materials and methods that will stimulate students to develop effective study
habits.

School Administrative. This study can help the administrators to gain more
valuable information about the impacts of study habits to academic performance, and can
help enhance overall school efficiency contributing to well-organized and conducive
learning environment for both students and faculty.

Parents/Guardians. Parents and Guardians play a crucial role in shaping the

educational journey of their children. Therefore, this research enables parents to make
informed decisions regarding their involvement in supporting theirs Childrens academic
journey, fostering a partnership with educators for the benefit of their students.

Future Researchers. This study can serve as a foundation for future research
endeavors related to study habits and academic performance. It can inspire further
investigations into different grade levels, schools, or study habit interventions.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored to the theory of Behaviorism by B.F. Skinner. According to

this theory, learning occurs by linking stimuli and responses. Knowledge is independent,
and it becomes cemented by way of punishments and rewards. These ideas of positive
and negative reinforcement, which may be natural consequences or implemented by
another, are effective tools for learning and behavior modification. Behaviorism focuses
on observed actions, the conditions under which they are performed, and the
reinforcement of desired behaviors. A change in performance is evident after the learning
process, and the outcome is measured in terms of being able to demonstrate a specific
new behavior Gandhi, Mukherji (2022)
6

Behaviorism emphasizes the role of reinforcement in shaping behaviors. In the

context of study habits, this means that behaviors related to studying can be strengthened
or weakened through reinforcement. Positive reinforcement, like rewarding yourself after
productive study sessions, can encourage the development of good study habit. Operant
conditioning Poonam Sachdev (2022) is also a key component of behaviorism, it is
applicable to study habits which means Students can learn to associate the act of studying
(the behavior) with desirable outcomes, such as good grades or personal satisfaction. This
can help the grade 11 students of Carmen National Senior High School establish and
maintain effective study habits. Environmental Influence on the other hand underscores
the impact of the environment on behavior. In this study, this suggests that creating a
conducive study environment can promote good habits. For example, setting up a quiet,
organized space for studying can encourage regular study sessions. Habit formation is a
central concept in behaviorism. Regular and consistent study behaviors, when reinforced,
can become ingrained as habits. This is essential for long-term academic success B.F
Skinner (2000). Behavior Modification techniques, like shaping (gradual reinforcement
of desired behaviors) and extinction (eliminating unwanted behaviors through lack of
reinforcement), can be applied to improve study habits. For instance, gradually increasing
study time can help students build longer, more effective study habits B.F Skinner (1953).
