B. Vocabulary Rhetorical - the art of effective communication through visual elements such as
Development/ images, typography, and texts.
Unlocking of Absolutist person who holds absolute principles in political, philosophical,
Baroque Architecture has its own definition and uniqueness which is shown by the baroque characteristics.
The dramatic style of Baroque architecture makes the viewers or the visitors impress and amuse.
According to my research the popularity and success of the Baroque style was encouraged by the Roman
Catholic Church, which had decided at the time of the Council of Trent, in response to the Protestant Reformation,
that the arts should communicate religious themes in direct and emotional involvement. In addition, Baroque
Architecture is a term used to describe the building style which began in late 16 th century in Italy that took the Roman
vocabulary of Renaissance architecture and used it in a new rhetorical and theatrical fashion, often to express the
triumph of the Catholic Church and the absolutist state. It was characterized by new explorations of form, light and
shadow and dramatic intensity.
Last Saturday, January 14, 2012, together with my classmates in architecture, we visited different churches
which features Baroque architecture.
Our first station is the Quiapo Church, located at Plaza Miranda along Quezon Boulevard, Manila. When I
am in front of the Quiapo church I wonder that this church has a twisted column compare to the other baroque style
churches that we visit because its more on classical column and the facade of this church keeps the baroque style.
When we entered the church, I noticed the abundance of window that vary to the strong light and shade contrast
effect that makes my eyes more amuse.
Another one is Binondo church also known as Minor Basilica of St. Lorenzo Ruiz located in Binondo,
Manila. Founded by the Dominican priests in 1596. Binondo Church is one of the oldest places of Christian worship
in the Philippines. When we entered the Binondo church, I was amazed to what I have seen, especially those painting
in the ceiling because of its dramatic effects that communicate religious themes in direct and emotional involvement. I
also noticed the huge nave of the church that keeps the Baroque style. When we are inside the church the dramatic
light coming from those huge windows give also beauty and elegance to the church.
Arriving at the San Agustin church our last station located at the historic walled city of Intramuros in Manila.
Completed by 1607, of all the churches that we visited, I can say that this San Agustin is the only church that is really
into Baroque Architecture. Based on my research year 1993, San Agustin Church was one of four Philippine
churches constructed during the Spanish colonial period to be designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO,
under the classification “Baroque Churches of the Philippines”. It had been named a National Historical Landmark by
the Philippine government in 1976.
Facing the facade of the San Agustin church is really amazing and the door opening of the church has
ornate carvings on its wooden doors. Sadly, we cannot go inside because the church was closed. But according to
my professor the San Agustin interior is in the form of a Latin cross. The church has 14 side chapels and ceiling
painted in 1875 by Italian artists Cesare Alberoni and Giovanni Dibella. In the choir loft there are 17th-century hand-
carved seats of molave a beautiful tropical hardwood.
Exploring in the different churches makes me feel so lucky, so I kept those memories and pictures like a
treasure. I am proud of being a student who major in architecture because not all the students have the opportunity
to experience this exciting, educational and amazing tour that makes us more inspired.
