I. INTRODUCTION
1. Site description
The geology of the region belongs to the Western Meseta domain and is composed
of a Paleozoic basement (Primary) overlaid by a cover of terrains of more recent
ages (Secondary and Tertiary).
The geological formations of the basement are generally composed of schists,
dolomitized limestones, quartzites, granites, etc. whose ages range from Cambrian
to Permian (-530 Myr to -245 Myr) and which record traces of metamorphism and
deformation of the Caledonian and Hercynian orogenies.
Figure 2: Geological background of the RSK region (Geological maps of Morocco at 1/2.000.000 and 1/1.000.000,
Ministry of Energy and Mines)
The post-Paleozoic age cover, of rather tabular form, shows a succession of terrains
of an essentially marine sedimentary nature (limestone, clay, marl, etc.), locally
interspersed by volcanic rocks of the Triassic age (basalt and dolerite).
Geologically, the study area is part of the Gharb plain; this plain corresponds to a
collapse ditch located between two large structural sets resting on a general
substratum constituted by the thick marly series of the mid-Pliocene.
The Gharb basin is located within the southernmost of the structural entities of the
Riffian chain. To the north and to the east, it is limited by the hills with material
belonging to the pre-Riffan Nappe; to the south, its formations rest on the base of the
Meseta: to the west, it extends into the Atlantic Ocean.
The history of the basin has been linked to many factors such as bedrock
subsidence, eustatic variations. Sediment inputs and regional tectonics. However,
the most important factor was the emplacement of the Prerifan Nappe by gravity
sliding in the northern margin of the basin during the Lower Tortonian, then the
very pronounced local tectonics from the Upper Tortonian to the Present.
The Gharb would have originated during a generalized distensive phase of
Tortonian to Pliocene age, with a NE-SW extension direction; then, a compressive
episode during the upper Pliocene and at the beginning of the Quaternary would
have given rise to folds on the northern border of the basin.
Finally, a last episode during the Quaternary would have been at the origin of
deformations with a large radius of curvature, and the replay of faults. The
structural evolution of the Gharb basin would have taken place in an essentially
permanent compressive context with a NE-SW compression direction.
The stratigraphic column of the Neogene formations of the Gharb basin includes
sediments of Tortonian to Quaternary age, the nature of which varies from the edge
to the center of the basin, where the total thickness can reach 2000 m. It is generally a
thick succession of transgressive and discordant marls and sands on the older series.
In the center of the basin, the Tortonian and Messinian sequences correspond to thick
clayey-silty levels of open sea, testifying to a deltaic and turbiditic environment.
While on the borders, the deposits of bioclastic sands or carbonates indicate a
platform.
Within clay-dominated sequences, thin sandy-silty bodies (often a few meters) and
reduced extension can develop and be the source of gas accumulations.
3. Regional hydrology
The Gharb plain is crossed from East to West by the Sebou valley (Oued), which has
its source in the Middle Atlas at 2030 m altitude. Its watershed, is of about 40,000
km², extending over the areas of the Rif (essentially impermeable), the Middle Atlas
(limestone) and the Meseta (essentially impermeable). The lower Sebou, embedded
in the clayey-silty alluvial deposits, crosses the Gharb plain over a length of about
225 km before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean at Mehdia. Along its course, the Sebou
intercepts several tributaries, the most important of which are the wadis (Oueds)
Inaouène, Lebène and especially Ouergha on the right bank. The wadis R'dom and
Beht on the left shore.
The Gharb plain is a natural collector of water surface. Its flat morphology (the
majority of the plain having a coastline less than 12 m) disadvantages the
evacuation of flood waters from the wadis (Oueds) to the sea. That is what makes
this area highly vulnerable to the flooding risk.
Moreover, the construction of the Idriss I (in 1973 on the Inouaè ne) and Al Wahda
(in 1996) dams was intended, among other things, to regulate the flows to be
evacuated by the Sebou wadi and consequently limit the risks of flooding in the
plain.
The Gharb region enjoys a semi-arid climate in the interior and sub-humid on the
coast. The height of the rains exceeds 500 mm per year in most of the plain, and the
average temperatures oscillate around 18.6°.
The cool and wet season lasts 7 months (from October to April). Two bioclimatic
stages share this region:
- The sub-humid level, under-level with temperate winter, dominating in the coastal
strip;
- The semi-arid level, under-level with temperate winters, dominating in the central
and eastern part.
The field subject of the present geotechnical study will be used for:
The construction of a 100m2 building (zone 1);
The construction of a 9m2 control tower on a 1000m² plot (zone 2).
The two (02) areas of the site for the new infrastructure were chosen by the
Contracting Authority UNOPS according to the following criteria:
• Availability of land with the necessary dimensions to accommodate the
infrastructure (at least 140 m²);
• Site configuration and area: capacity and adequate configuration of the site
to accommodate the proposed infrastructures in terms of size and shape (10m
* 10 m and 3 m * 3m approximately 100 m² and 9m²).
1. Investigation program
2. Stratigraphy
Representative samples were taken at 1.5 m, 2.5 m and 6 m depth for laboratory
analysis and testing.
3. Hydrogeology
The main point to note with in situ testing is that no water table was detected.
The dynamic penetration test is a geotechnical tests that evaluate the soil in site and
provides, as such, a soil characteristic called dynamic resistance (Rd).
It consists in:
Driving into the ground, by continuous beating, a string of rods equipped, in
the lower part, with a protruding point, while injecting a drilling mud
between the wall of the borehole and the rods;
Registering the number of blows necessary (Nd10) to make the point
penetrate into the ground to a height h of 10cm.
According to the dynamic penetration tests, it can be concluded that the nature of the
ground in place is characterized by:
Table 3: Results interpretation
1. Tests performed
The results of these tests are presented in the test report attached in Appendix 5.
VII. SETTLEMENTS
Given the classification of formations that is silty sand, the settlement of this type of
land is a fast phenomenon, even almost immediate, the land will undergo an instant
settlement immediately after the application of the load (construction load,
compaction ... etc.), this is due mostly to the rearrangements between soil grains, and
takes place as soon as the loads are applied.
In view of the results of the identification of the formations in place (Silty sand), and
in order to analyse the risks of liquefaction, we proceeded to calculate the soil
parameters, the results of which are as follows:
Sr=52,20%

It is noted that all the parameters are checked, except the parameter of the degree of
saturation, the susceptibility to the risk of liquefaction can only take place if the
degree of saturation is 100%.
2. Useful recommendations
- Ensure good water draining, on the surface and in depth around the construction,
in order to avoid the infiltration of water in depth and thereafter increase the
saturation level of soil.
- Ensure a good compaction of the grounds, using one of the methods of
compaction such as:
Vibroflotation method;
Dynamic compaction.
The seismic hazard maps established by R.P.S 2000 revised version of 2011 constitute
the basic documents for the evaluation of the seismic characteristics of the site such
as the acceleration and the maximum horizontal ground velocity. As well as the type
of site and the influence factor.
Figure 3: Seismic zoning map of acceleration and velocity for 10% probability in 50 years. [Source RPS
2011]
The parameters taken into account for the building design to adequately resist to
seismic loads are summarized in the following table:
X. FOUNDATION SYSTEM
Considering the type of the planned construction, on the first hand, and the
elements highlighted during our site investigation, on a second hand, we suggest to
found the building and the control tower, according to the following modalities:
a) Footing mode
The foundation system of the future building is a superficial system of a central
isolated footings stiffened by stringers and peripheral strip footings (eventually
under peripheral walls) with a horizontal edge of 0.5m minimum.
b) Bearing capacity
Based on the results of the laboratory tests, we recommend for foundation
design a bearing capacity up to 1.31 bar in the backfill (calculation note
attached in Appendix 6).
a) Footing mode
The foundation system of the project is a superficial system consisting of a raft with
concrete walls around the periphery to be anchored in the reddish silty sand with a
horizontal edge of 0.5m minimum.
b) Bearing capacity
Based on the results of the laboratory tests, we recommend for foundation design a
bearing capacity up to 1.88 bar in the compact reddish silty sand (calculation note
attached in Appendix 6).
XI. EARTHWORKS
Given the nature of the site encountered, the earthworks will be done using
conventional methods such as shovels and pickaxes or mechanical shovels.
-Central isolated
footings stiffened by
Raft foundation with
Foundation system stringers; concrete walls around
- Peripheral strip the periphery
footings (Eventually
under peripheral walls).
B. RECOMMANDATIONS
In order to minimize the risks of settlement and undesirable disorders, it is preferable
to respect the following recommendations:
Earthworks should preferably be carried out outside of bad weather periods;
Concerning the building, we recommend to :
- Leave a minimum distance of 5m between the building limit and the crest
of the slope;
- Avoid excessive watering in the surroundings of constructions;
- Ensure a surface drainage system to limit runoff and water infiltration at
the embankment;
- Install a ditch/gutter at the bottom of the embankment, which serves as a
water collection system, it must be maintained regularly or connected to
the public water drainage system;
- Place blocking stones at the bottom of the embankment.
