The Speech Writing Process

Writing an effective speech follows certain steps or process. The process is not
chronological or linear; rather it is recursive which means you can repeat a writing
procedure or step indefinitely or produce multiple drafts first before you can settle
on the right one. Below is the diagram which shows the stages and steps in writing
a speech.

3 (DO_Q2_ORAL COM_G11_MODULE 2_LESSON5)

STAGE 1

• Conducting an audience analysis – involves looking into the profile of your

target audience/ listeners. This is done so you can perfectly prepare your
speech content and delivery for your audience.
The profile includes the following information:
▪ demography (age range, male-female ratio, educational background
and affiliations or degree program taken, nationality, economic
status, academic or corporate designations)
▪ situation (time, venue, occasion, and size)
▪ psychology (values, beliefs, attitudes, preferences, cultural and
racial ideologies, and needs)
• Determining the purpose of the speech – The purpose for writing and
delivering the speech are classified into three—to inform, to entertain, or to
persuade.
• Selecting a topic – The topic is your central idea of your speech, which can
be determined once you have decided on your purpose. It is encouraged
that you choose a topic which interest you the most or what your audience
interests are.
• Narrowing down a topic – means making your main idea more specific and
focused. You are trying to specify general ideas to make it more precise and
clearer.
• Gathering data – the stage where you collect ideas, information, sources,
and references relevant or related to your specific topic.

STAGE 2
• Identify a speech pattern – are structures that will help you organize the
ideas related to your topic. Examples are biographical, categorical/topical,
causal, chronological, comparison/contrast, problem-solution, and
spatial.
• Preparing an outline – is the hierarchical list that shows the relationship
and summary of your ideas that you want to present to your speech.
• Creating the body of speech – the part of your speech where you present
all the needed explanations, examples, or any details that can help you
deliver your purpose and explain the main idea of your speech.
• Preparing the introduction – the foundation of your speech. Here, your
primary goal is to get the attention of your audience and present to them
the subject or main idea of your speech.
• Preparing the conclusion – it provides the summary, emphasizes the
message, and calls for action of your speech.

4 (DO_Q2_ORAL COM_G11_MODULE 2_LESSON5)

STAGE 3
• Editing and/ or revising – the process of correcting errors in mechanics,
such as grammar, punctuation, capitalization, unity, coherence, and
others.
• Rehearsing – One of the most important procedure in preparing for a
speech. This gives you an opportunity to identify what works and what
does not work for you and for your target audience.

What is Good Delivery?

The more you care about your topic, the greater your motivation to present it
well. Good delivery is a process of presenting a clear, coherent message in an
interesting way. (Lucas, 2009)
Six Elements of Good Delivery:
Conversational Style, is the speaker’s ability to sound expressive and to be
perceived by the audience as natural. It’s a style that approaches the way you
normally express yourself in a much smaller group than large number of
audiences.
Eye Contact, is the speaker’s ability to have visual contact with everyone in
the audience. Your audience/ listeners should feel that you’re speaking to
them, not simply speaking.
Vocalize, also known as paralanguage, is the subfield of nonverbal
communication that examines how we use our voices to communicate orally.
Volume, refers to the loudness or softness of a speaker’s voice. As always
stated, public speakers need to speak loudly enough to be heard by everyone.

14 (DO_Q2_ORAL COM_G11_MODULE 2_LESSON6)

Pitch, refers to the highness or lowness of a speaker’s voice. Some speakers
have deep voices and others have high voices which definitely affects the
clarity of speech.
Pauses, are brief breaks in a speaker’s delivery that can show emphasis and
enhance the clarity of a message.
Tools for Effective Speech Delivery
To be effective in your delivery, watch and emulate people who speak in public
excellently. While observing, take note of the following:
• How they approach their audience (formal, informal, personal,
conversational, intimate, among others)
• How they connect with their audience (using eye contact, body
movements, and facial expressions)
• How they present themselves (stage presence: how they look, stand,
walk, use nonverbal cues, act on and off the stage)
• How they use their voice in terms of volume (loudness or softness),
pitch (highness or lowness), rate or speed, pauses to show emphasis and
strengthen the clarity of the message, vocal variety (effective changes in
volume, pitch, rate and pauses), and pronunciation

Activity #1: Watch Me!

3. Did the speech inspire you “Not to Give Up!”?

Activity #2: Your TURN!

Directions: After watching the short motivational speech, try to do your own
speech now. Write a two-paragraph speech which focuses on
convincing your classmates to participate in your upcoming
school graduation ball.
Apply the six elements of good speech delivery. (p. 11-12)

23 (DO_Q2_ORAL COM_G11_MODULE 2_LESSON7)

Collaborative Activity
Directions: Group the class into 5 (five), let them read the short composition
to each other as if they are delivering a speech. After which, let
them answer the guide questions. (use a separate sheet of paper
for your answers)

“Ways of Love”
-Myron Willie III B. Roque-

“Love moves in mysterious ways!” What is Love? Though being defined

and answered in various ways, Love will always be something that involves
ones intense and strong feelings that is a product of different manifestations
of emotions.

Love, as vague as how the sea is, as they say, cannot be explained and
be measured by words. Thus, “Actions speaks louder than words!”, so people
tend to show how much they love a person through their actions. So, if you
love someone, show it, don’t just say it!

Guide Questions:

1. How did your classmates deliver the composition as a speech?

2. Do you think they can do better if given time to prepare?
3. Do you think it would be better if the composition is memorized and then
presented?

Speeches can be categorized into four broad areas depending on the

amount of preparation that is undertaken and depending upon the nature of
the occasion. The four types of speeches according to delivery are manuscript,
memorized, extemporaneous, and impromptu.
The goal of this module is to acquaint you with these four different
manners of delivery, to provide suggestions for when you are asked to make
impromptu remarks, and then to focus most your time on the preparation,
practice, and presentation.
Manuscript speech is the word-for-word presentation of a written message.
In a manuscript speech, the speaker maintains his or her attention on the
printed page except when using visual aids. The advantage to reading from a
manuscript is the exact repetition of original words.
Potential Problems:
▪ Since this type of speech follows a word-for-word method, you might
be tempted to skip practicing the speech.

24 (DO_Q2_ORAL COM_G11_MODULE 2_LESSON7)

▪ If you fail to practice your speech and decide just read it on the day,
you might be glued to the speech all throughout. You may also forget
making eye contact with your audience since you are not familiar
with your script.
▪ Lastly, because everything is planned since you have script to read,
you will surely want to cover everything in your speech before you
run out of time and it will surely affect your connection to your
audience since you are too focused in finishing your script.

Memorized speech is the recitation of a written message that the speaker has
committed to memorize. When it comes to speeches, memorization can be
useful when the message needs to be exact and the speaker doesn’t want to
be confined by notes.
Potential Problems:
▪ In many cases the speaker might forget what he/she are supposed
to say (mental blocked). Long pauses can create a very awkward
moment between you and your audience, worst scenario is for the
speaker not being able to finish the speech.
▪ You might memorize the speech mechanically which affects the
dynamics of speech delivery (tone of voice, feelings, and the like).
This will surely result in a very unnatural delivery of the speech.
▪ You might focus too much on the content. Consequently, trying to
remember for the right words that you have memorized which might
make you look tense and uneasy.
▪ You might be too focused in remembering your script. This will give
you no chance to pay attention and respond to audience questions
and feedback.

Impromptu speech is the presentation of a short message without advance

preparation. Impromptu speeches often occur when someone is asked to “say
a few words” or give a toast on a special occasion.
Potential Problems:
▪ Since, it is on the spot, you might not be able to respond right away,
unless, you are very aware of the topic.
▪ Response might be not that long since you have no preparation at
all.

Extemporaneous speech is the presentation of a carefully planned and

rehearsed speech, spoken in a conversational manner using brief notes. By
using notes rather than a full manuscript, the extemporaneous speaker can
establish and maintain eye contact with the audience and assess how well
they are understanding the speech as it progresses. The opportunity to assess
is also an opportunity to restate more clearly any idea or concept that the
audience seems to have trouble grasping.
Potential Problems:
▪ Not rehearsing your prepared outline might cause you distraction
upon presenting your speech.
▪ If the outline manuscript is not properly organized, it might cause
confusion in the part of the speaker him/herself.
