The Martyrdom of Rizal
Who:
Carlos “Botong” V. Francisco. Born on November 4, 1912, in
Angono. He became one of the Philippine National Artists for
Visual Arts.
When: 1973
Where: National Museum
How:
Francisco is best recognized for his monumental and gigantic paintings reflecting
historical events in the Philippines. He is usually recognized as he reshaped the
Philippines' fine arts method. He split away from the usual and typical form and
started the modernist movement. This is when he painted the Martyrdom of Rizal
Mural.
Why:
Rizal's death was a historic event in our country since it stirred nationalism and
the beginning of some form of social change or restoration in our society as a
whole. It triggers the people to step up from being silent and start to fight for the
country. The painting shows the assassination of Philippine national hero Dr.
Jose Rizal on December 30, 1896, at Bagong Bayan (now Rizal Park).
