ABSTRACT

This research investigated the effect of using comic strips on Islamic students’
vocabulary mastery. This research was aimed at finding out whether there is a
significant effect on Islamic students’ vocabulary mastery between the students
who are taught by using comic strips and those who are not and figuring out the
students’ responses toward the effect of using comic strips on their vocabulary
mastery. A mixed-method was used as a research design which was conducted
tothe students at the eighth grade of an Islamic Junior High School in
Tasikmalaya in the academic year 2017/2018.By using cluster random sampling
technique, the writer selected two classes as the participants of this research.
Moreover, the amount of participants was 60 students and was divided into two
groups. The quantitative data was obtained from the vocabulary test, while
qualitative data was obtained from the questionnaires. The vocabularytest was
analyzed by using the inferential statistics adapted from Fraenkel, et al. (2012, p.
140)while the questionnaires was analyzed by using exploratory data analysis
adapted from Cohen, et al. (2007, p. 507). The results showed that the value of t-
test (=3.268) is higher than the value of t-table (= 2.000). It means that the null
hypothesis (H0) in this research was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (H 1)
in this research was accepted. Thus, there is a significant effect on Islamic
students’ vocabulary mastery between the students who are taught by using comic
strips and those who are not. The results also showed that the use of comic strips
could be applied in learning vocabulary because they were more liked to read,
easy to use and attractive materials. In conclusion, the use of comic strips could
improve Islamic students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of an Islamic
Junior High School in Tasikmalaya. Moreover, the students could improve their
vocabulary acquisition, mastery, and achievement by using comic strips.
Regarding the conclusions, the teachers are suggested use comic strips in teaching
vocabulary to their students. Besides that, the students are suggested to overcome
their difficulties in learning vocabulary and in improving their vocabulary
mastery.

completed the paper entitled: “The Effect of Using Comic Strips on Islamic

Students’ Vocabulary Mastery (A Mixed-Method Study at the Eighth Grade of an

Islamic Junior High School in Tasikmalaya).” This paper is submitted to the

English Education Program Faculty of Teacher Training and Educational Sciences

of Galuh University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for getting

SarjanaPendidikanDegree.In writing this paper, the writer believes that this
