11. A bag contains 5 black and 3 white balls. Two balls are drawn at random, then find the
probability of getting (a) 2 black balls (b) 1 black and 1 white ball.
12. Suppose that A and B are two events, then answer the following:
i. If P(A) = 0.4, P(B) = 0.3 and P(AB) = 0.2, then evaluate P(A ∪ B)
ii. If A and B are independent and P(A) = 0.3, P(B) = 0.4, then evaluate P(A ∪ B)
iii. If A and B are mutually exhaustive, then evaluate P(A ∪ B)
iv. If A and B are mutually exclusive, evaluate P(A ∩ B)
v. If A and B are complementary events and P(A) = 0.1, then find P(B).
13. There are three urns each of which contains red and white balls as follows Urn I: 6 red
and 4 white balls, Urn II: 2 red and 6 white balls, Urn III: 1 red and 8 white balls. An urn
is arbitrary chosen and a ball drawn from there. The ball is red. Find the probability that
the chosen urn is either urn II or urn III.

A two-dimensional random variable (𝑋, 𝑌) has the spectrum {(𝑖, 𝑗) ∶ 𝑖, 𝑗 =


1, 2, 3} and the probability masses 𝑓𝑖𝑗 are given by 𝑓𝑖𝑗 = 𝑘𝑖𝑗, where k is a
constant. Find
i. 𝑘
ii. 𝑃(1 ≤ 𝑋 ≤ 3, 𝑌 ≤ 2)
iii. 𝑃(𝑋 ≥ 2)
iv. 𝑃(𝑌 ≤ 2)
v. 𝑃(𝑋 = 2)
vi. the marginal p.m.f. of 𝑋 and 𝑌.
vii. Are 𝑋 and 𝑌 independent?

19. Answer the following question: [10+5]

i. Approximate ∫0 𝑥𝑒 −0.5 𝑑𝑥 using the Trapezoidal rule with 3 strips, to 3 decimal
places.
ii. Approximate the area under the curve 𝑦 = 𝑓(𝑥) between 𝑥 = 0 and 𝑥 = 4
using Simpson’s 1/3 rule with 𝑛 = 4 subintervals. The function 𝑓(𝑥) is given in
the table of values.
