Tennis Ace
By Alison West

Naomi Osaka is one of the world’s top tennis players today. She was born in Osaka, Japan, in 1997. Her
father is from Haiti and her mother is from Japan. She has an older sister called Mari.
In 1999, Naomi’s father watched American tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams play tennis at the
French Open. Because of this, and despite having little experience of tennis himself, he decided to give his
daughters lessons.
When Naomi was three, her family moved to New York. In 2006, they moved to Florida. Naomi was still
training hard and showing a lot of talent. As a result, she didn’t play in junior competitions. Instead she
competed with women players. Her first match was in October 2011 on her 14th birthday.
In 2013, shortly before she turned 16, Naomi played her first professional match. She played brilliantly in
all her matches and in 2016, she received the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) best new player prize.
Then, in 2018, Naomi won the US Open. It was a difficult competition, but she didn’t give up, beating
Serena Williams in the final round.
As well as prize money, Naomi has received money from companies who want her to advertise their
sportswear. In 2014, sportswear company Adidas paid her to wear their sports clothes. Nike™ replaced
Adidas in 2019. At one point, she was thought to be the highest paid female athlete of all time.
Naomi has had some difficult moments in her career. For example, the media haven’t always been kind to
her. However, she is a brilliant tennis player and is a role model for young people.
